I'd rather improve our ground forces.
Okay. I would like to create faster loading muskets soon.

We could try have a go at making simple mortors next turn?
Sure we go with mulardA for design, improve our musket reload in revise and produce both in production?

Yeah. This turn, should we try and improve our muskets so they reload faster?

Let's wait on a cost estimate first. Though that post on the main thread kind of implies we're pushing a national effort.

Spoiler: AM-MulardA (click to show/hide)
So, cost estimate on this please Zan?

It's a large ship with several cannons so the resource portion of the expenses would put it at Very Expensive.  As mentioned in the International Thread, a one turn Complexity level would be added, putting it at a National Effort.  Due to the complexity of a steam engine, it would wind up being kept there, unless the Production Phase is used to bring it down, until the steam engine is no longer be considered complex.

Well we can use production stage for it, so will we go with it?

Edit 1: Tntey do you want to use revise to try make it even more cheaper?

What are the drawbacks of using a production stage to make it not complex? Also, what would happen if the ship has a conplexity level?

More complex is the more resource it takes and less amount we can make.

None really, but it becomes a problem if you have more than one thing you want to use the production stage on.

Also, what would happen if the ship has a conplexity level?

A complexity level causes the expense cost to shift up 1 rank.  Only way to reach National Effort level, as Very Expensive is the highest something can get from resources.

Alright, so we will use our production level to make steam engines. What are we going to improve this turn?

Well if we revise the steam engine we can try bring down it cost so it wont hopefully wont trouble us next turn.

Guns are the obvious choice for improvements. I just don't really know what we could do to them. Shortening the barrel would let them load faster and make them more accurate (in the the shot would fly straighter, but they'd be harder to aim) but there's other problems there so...

What about rifling? It's barely any difference at all to have very simple muzzle-loading rifled bullets, like so (the rifling is only 4 grooves and the bullet is just lead. It would be negligible extra work to go from smoothbore to that), but I don't know if we could modify both the muskets and the ammunition in the same year.

Ninjad: So long as we only have one complex piece of equipment we can stick with the engines as they are and use production to bring down the Mulard's effective costs for now. Maybe we'll bother with that later when we're rolling out more fancy stuff.

Ship + rifling/improved cartridges + improving steam engines sounds good to me.

Looks good. What are we going to do for espionage?

We can either try to steal a random tech, sabotage or protect ours I think.
