Since other races kidnap Dwarven children, who can later rise up to ludicrously high ranks in their society, is it possible to capture and indoctrinate other races' children? Or to get prisoners to breed and take away their children, over time even replacing the fort's population until you have a fortress of the dwarfiest elves and humans imagineable.

Sorry if this is a weird idea, just the rambling thoughts of a newbie.

No, you can't. Even if you could get prisoners to breed (which I don't think you can, but I'm not sure. I think sieges prevent breeding), you can't "tame" them.

However, the next DF version will allow multi race fortresses, so you could allow immigration of elves, gorlaks, humans, goblins, and animal people (might be possible with kobolds and gremlins as well). There's some discussion about letting "unfortunate accidents" befall all of the dwarven inhabitants after that.

now, even though you want to make them dwarfy, it still makes you an elf sympathizer that you would allow an elf to live in your fortress for any reason other than a zoo, arrow splitting, or spelling stuff since vowels be rare

What about meat shields? That was my initial thought, to breed elves and humans to use as meat shields when I eventually penetrate the HFS. Just chain them all up with all chains linked to a single lever

Guys, we're all ignoring the elephant in the room. They're tall, and we only need them to reach things on high shelves, because getting a step ladder would take too long. Also, I look forward to the ocelotman uprising, and greet our new ocelords warmly.

You can breed tame humanoids and with the a natural hunter skill tag they'll grab crossbows and bolts to go hunting off on their own. It's the closest thing to a foreign legion you'll get; think rooftop slave archers of Bagdhad or Jerusalem crossed with a zoo

Quick search of "rooftop slave archers of Baghdad" came up with Mamluks, which *is* an interesting piece of history.

One way to set up a Foreign Legion is to cage-trap creatures that are both powerful and hostile to everybody (Dragons, for example), build the cages, and release them against sieges. After the battle, you can re-trap and re-cage them.

My own Forgotten Beast Petting Zoo is built with a wall that can be lowered... back-to-back drawbridges... and lever-controlled cages, so that they can all be released onto the surface at once if serious !!FUN!! is required.

There's this strange bug I've been noticing in my game. I regularly trap entire caravans of merchants in cage traps, whom I use to populate my cliffside prison cells. Very rarely, about once in two caravans, one guard/merchant would ocassionally convert to my fortress's side after a while (and I had to uncage them before they starved to death). In other words, they were no longer listed as Friendly, and had joined my fortress's unit list. If they were dwarves, I could order them to do all labours as usual; human converts just linger around in the meeting hall (normal behaviour for nondwarves citizens).

Just something interesting I thought I'd share. Always liked to think my dwarves were giving them an ultimatum: "Join us or rot in this prison cell for an eternity!"

Maybe the traders immigrated, but nobody had told them that migrants were meant to start somewhere other than their destination. Does the potential migrant pool care about where dwarves are?

Sounds like what you could do in the original Dungeon Keeper. You capture invading heroes or other Keepers' minions, throw them in the torture chamber(heal them first) and eventually they may join your side. Or they die of torture(and turn into a ghost). Or leave them to die in the prison and they become a skeleton.
