Tears for the Plants?
« on: November 10, 2015, 03:23:39 pm »

Does plant gathering inevitably produce dwarven tears?

I've noticed over a few embarks that my herbalists are constantly in tears when plant gathering.  At first I put it down to whip vine influences (none of the embarks have been evil...) but it seems to happen even when they aren't involved.  The tears dry up soon after plant gathering is abandoned.  Cave adaption is not the cause.

I did a quick known bug search and came up empty.

Remarkable coincidence or have I missed the fact that dwarfs are sentimental plant-lovers.  :o

Tears are produced by "extreme emotion" which can be positive or negative.  But it'd be odd to get people who enjoy their work that much so many times in a row.

It's probably the rain, the sun or the cold or some combination of the lot. Being able to analyse your dwarven adventurers tears in the next version should help to explain what makes dwarves cry in general.

Perhaps all dwarves suffer from hay fever.

There's nothing special about whip vines, though?

Try to let them gather in the caverns to see whether it's related to certain plants or the outside as mentioned above.

I thought it was alright, actually.

Still don't think dwarves cry about genocides for anything other than sympathy, though.

Try to let them gather in the caverns to see whether it's related to certain plants or the outside as mentioned above.

Gathering plants in the caverns results in tears.  Doesn't neccessarily appear on first harvest but round about third (quick and dirty test).  Dwarf only shows 'felt satisfied at work' in thoughts.

(The whip vine red herring was because it's a savage biome plant: overseer clutching at straws.)

Really, is noone else seeing this?

In v40 I seem to have dwarves randomly crying all the time, but I put it down to a combination of visible dead bodies, cave adaptation, tantrums, weather, etc.

Now that I think about it, are you sure there aren't corpses outside/in the caverns that all your gatherers are seeing?

edit: Another possibility is that tears don't naturally go away over time, so a dwarf may have cried once and you will always see tears on them unless they "take a bath" at a well. I'm not sure about this though.

The only reasons my dwarves ever cry are extreme trauma or being unclothed. For the latter reason, there tends to be a lot of crying on my embarks. (Who has the time or dwarfpower to set up a clothing industry?)
