Just thought of this, and pardon if I'm repeating someone's idea (I've been away from DF for a few years, finally making my way home!)

Circuit Training your military.
You might have them alternating, one month standard training, one month going through your "circuit training" setup.

Set up as a patrol route: make them climb some walls, swim through water, dodge through a "danger room" type spot, then go round and do it again.

Any other ideas? Anyone tried this before?

Thanks for that - I had actually looked at that before, though. It's similar in idea, but not the same - I guess my idea is more of a "role-play" idea. It's like military circuit training - you know, where soldiers etc run around an arduous circuit, climbing over walls, crawling under barbed wire etc.

I think I shall have a go and paste up a few shots the results.

Sounds fun. Could liven up cavern patrols.

- Climbing walls: Very hard to do, since dorfs don't climb unless there is no other path, and usually just sit and mope (and go to sleep) rather than climb even if there is a simple climb available. The best way to get them to climb is to intentionally block their path to keep them in place and out of danger...
- Swimming: Similar problems, but can probably be achieved using pressure plates that release water, or drawbridges that drop the trainees into water (risk of injury from the fall and drowning due to stunning, though). I believe flowing pathable water pushing dorfs into deeper water has been used for swimming training. My guess is that mine cart riding swimming training is more effective, though (but horrible from a role playing perspective, of course).
- Danger room: Be aware that dorfs drop their gear for replacement with shinier stuff, claiming the new stuff immediately without necessarily getting it pronto. Thus, if a danger room is used, the dorfs should already have top quality gear throughout or no new armor should be produced in any way (including post siege battlefield recovery, but you'll probably have better gear than that anyway), or serious injuries can occur. There's always a risk for face wounds.

I have no idea what blocked paths will do to patrols, though, since I've never used patrols, but I wouldn't be surprised if path blocking would lead to service abandonment in the same way militia ineptitude in finding existing paths to enemies they're ordered to attack causes them to desert and go back to (individual) training.

Thinking...

Pressure plate A releases water, which takes them to 1x1 3 high drop into water.  Pressure plate B in the pool drains the pool when dwarves are in it.
Dwarves may either catch their fall and climb out, or go for a brief swim.  Limit patrol size to 1 to avoid unfortunate events like collisions or dropping into the pool while its empty.

The Dwarven Child Care thread should have you covered for training needs.

IIRC, swimming training is done easiest by using a pump with flowing water to push dwarves into water over and over again. I think one design I saw had the pump dwarf powered, generating the job that gets them pushed, and acting as an automatic shut-off. (May not have been in the DCC thread.)

Do what he above me said, and have the floors around the room made of the lightest wood you can (feather<candlenut<willow<all other normal trees) as it will mitigate the injuries a bit.
I think it will also train armor user a bit when they get hit the ground too. And itll let you train up a doctor too as there may be a number of broken fingers and such. Probably wanna make sure any dorfs have helmets though.


As far as the danger room bit.
If you gave them a single tile walkway to cross (while armored), covered in training speared, that on both sides has a 4-6 deep pool of water, they may just dodge the spears and jump in the pools accomplishing both dodge and swimming.

How shallow does the water have to be to insure it is impossible to drown? I know that if it is 7 deep, any untrained or stunned dwarf will drown, and the wiki says if the water is 4 deep or less any dwarf can path through it.

But what about a recruit, untrained in swimmer, untrained in armor user, wearing heavy armor, stunned, in 1-4 deep water?

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

I may be remembering incorrectly, but I think it was discovered that you can train swimming while asleep?
