Best websites to sell my car in the US? Where I should post....
« on: November 07, 2015, 06:03:31 pm »

Ok, so I would like to ask about website in the US to post my car for sale on, preferably without any fees to me.

I know about craigslist.

I've never used ebay but I'd like to learn. Any other ideas out there?

Thank you for reading.

It depends a lot on what kind of car and where you are. Throwing it up in the general classifieds and craigslist is probably the most useful for most purposes, while Ebay and specialist type listings are more for selling collector type vehicles.

And if it's a grand national you're selling on the cheap, I'm totally good for a few bucks

Lol, I wish I had that kind of car to sell or otherwise. :)

Thank you very much though Strife (and all others to come). I'm in the Midwest (Indiana/Ohio/Michigan area).

It's just a 5 year old car that runs well with no body damage or anything. There's nothing to write home about and I only want a couple thousand (low Kelly Bluebook value for its condition, because I know dealers get the higher values).

Hum, yeah, is autotrader any good? Any other place? I just want other places to post it. I don't wanna try posting or selling anything here but yeah you know what I'm asking for. Sites that work.

Craigslist is the only free one as far as I know. I buy/sell a fair amount of cars, and even considering how bullshitty it gets sometimes, it still gets stuff sold.

I think a basic Cars.com ad is also free. It's worth looking into that.

Autotrader and eBay cost money. It's fairly insignificant if you're selling a car that needs the visibility, but if you're just selling Average Commuter Civic #20582, that stuff will sell on CL within 24 hours if you price it right.

Craigslist is not a bad place to sell a car, but don't be surprised if after making arrangements to meet a buyer, they show up with only 80%, in cash, of the price you discussed on the phone and then get angry if you won't take it.

Yep.

To combat this:

Get to know the person a bit before meeting to show the car - you'll be able to sense if the person is pleasant to deal with, or if they're a hardline car flipper who gets deals by intimidating the seller in person. Via email, ask them if they have any questions about the car, etc.

Don't take offers. List price or nothing.

Be assertive in person. Be knowledgeable about the car you're selling, dont' let yourself get negotiated down due to BS/imaginary 'faults'.

Cool thank you all. I'm going to leave this here, because it'll probably come up with a lot of other people too if you think about it.

Plus I'm always sure it would be a great idea to get more ideas/answers for this thread.
