Just one question, why would you hope for a chaos quickblade? I thought Chaos was a not very good brand.

Its actually pretty good, although accidentally hasting or beserking your enemies is embarassing. Its definitely the most versatile brand because of its wide range of damage types. Crazy Yiuf's staff often carries me all the way to Lair. A Quickblade of Chaos would be even better, although it could also potentially go horribly wrong.

When did zombies (your zombies, of course - apparently the Dungeon's zombie population has managed to survive forever) start crumbling to dust? It's kind of harshing the mellow of my necromancer - those meatshields are supposed to become an invincible ablative shield on whatever level I'm on!

Yeah, necromancers have been nerfed in .17. But it also means high level undead-making spells (simulacrum, death channel) are more unambiguous upgrades to animate dead, instead of merely situational.

Lots of information there, even for relatively seasoned players. Did you know that Mnoleg doesn't actually have a mutation spell, but some of his melee attacks have a mutation brand? Neither did I! It has a lot that isn't listed in-game, like how the extra damage from brands is calculated, or what a monster's HP is, etc. Pretty handy, especially for newish players.

Chaos is normally a pretty terrible brand. Early on in particular, its pretty likely IMO to just get you killed. To want Chaos, I want to be certain I am going shortblades all the way, and I want to already have a quickblade. Examples:

2. Build like this, the SpEn we are talking about.
With a SpEn, for most kills, a +4 vanilla dagger is more than adequate. Any brand is basically unneeded luxury. Anything remotely threatening and hard to hex, I am chilling out behind my Malign Gateway, playing with my tentacle, maybe chatting to a few Shadow Creature meat shields. When I want an awesome brand it is to take care of non-threatening stuff quickly: River rats in lair; massive ogre packs I just disarmed with Tukima's Dance, because its funny; Draconian packs in Zot when I am invisible. All of these *could* be taken out with a +4 dagger. Its more fun to tab the hell out of them with a Chaos dagger though, banishing the lucky, paralyse/petrify stabbing the less lucky.

The potential to go horribly wrong is why I don't use Yiuf's staff on my Lajataurs. But my dude here is a Spriggan (sInv) with controlled blink. What does one do when faced with a suddenly berserk Orb Guardian? Hit it again. Its now berserk and paralysed, ha ha, bye. What does one do when faced with two suddenly berserk Orb Guardians? (Curse the moth and) blink away to safety, possibly taking the time to whip your tentacle out in the meantime.


So yeah, in summary, Chaos might have saved me maybe hundreds of turns relative to freeze, but more importantly, it would have been more fun :).

Should I take summon demon or summon hydra for my naga ice conjurer? I'm mostly looking for meatshields that wont melt instantly in my clouds. Ice beasts are not cutting it anymore, and I already have the spellforged servitor as a great damage dealer.

Went with Hydra. I want dragon call bad but I'm lacking a bit of summon skill for a reliable cast chance.

Edit: So hydra do not last long at all, but cast haste on it and it can dish out some insane damage.

On the other hand I'm not certain where to start extended. I may drop Kiku, but not sure whether to go for Ashenzari, or Vehumet.

Ash would be great in that he'd give me Clarity which would counteract my amulet's tendency to confuse me, and would be a great overall boost to my semi-hybrid playstyle.

Veh would boost my strongest side, and allow me to get Glaciate earlier, but tbh even Tornado is kind of an overkill right now (while at the same time being somewhat meh for the corridors and such of Zot).

I'm thinking of taking up melee combat, most likely a Demon trident or some such. I could, if I felt stupid enough, even go for something like Abandon Kiku -> TSO -> Bless weapon -> Ash/Vehu, but that'd probably take too long, and not actually be useful at all.

edit : Ah screw it, I'm gonna sleep on it. I wanted to win tonight, but I'm too tired and in a state of mild bewilderment, so no crawl for me. Basically I just need experience, so Pan seems like the easiest option.

Congrats on the second win, Covenant! Now if only I could seem to have another character survive past Lair[My DrCj died from getting hit with two Venom Bolts in one turn from a Guardian Serpent with no rPois]...

EDIT:

According to the Bay12 clan page, winning with Qazlal is worth one more point then winning with Sif. Spooky.

Yeah, extended being rather dull, especially with the added delay on webtiles, is a killer. Assuming I win my naga, I don't plan on doing extended in this tourney anymore - standard 5-rune wins for me thank you.

That's a mighty nice VM though :D

Oka is always amazing; I've won with Dith before and he was really strong for semi-stealth characters, but that was the version he got added, so he probably suffered a thousand tiny nerfs and changes since.

Innate Abilities, Weirdness & Mutations

Problem is this is literally the furthest I've gotten with a Statue form caster, let alone a Chei Octopode one. I am the angry fist of god, but some spellcasters/smiters/ranged don't seem to have gotten the memo and regularly take me to half hp or lower while I'm shambling towards them.

Anyone with more experience, how does one build a Chei Statuepode? Any spells I should be aware of? I know Passage of Golubria is a decent replacement for cBlink, and that Regen is generally nice, but that's it.

Thanks! You can always count on a trusty MiFi. I think this is my second spell-less 15-runer, although I did memorize the top three Necro spells just in case.
Noticed you've got a wand of slowing - can you cast that on yourself and then Slouch for extra damage?
Doesn't work, sorry. Only base movespeed counts.
Main problem is, do I use a shield, or not?
Ehh, if you haven't found any really cool shields I'd leave it alone. Anything larger than a buckler will take a lot of xp to offset the casting penalties, and any shield at all will (slightly) reduce your unarmed damage (no offhand punch). If you find a buckler of protection or resistance, or a cool randart with good intrinsics, I'd think about doing it; otherwise I'd leave it alone.

Yeah but checking your morgue, you did a butt-ton of Zig levels, and that's pretty damn impressive for a spell-less Fi, even if a Minotaur. Golly well done!

Also 4th Arra says ye to the shields, and considering he has like, the top 50 scores on Xtahua, I'll have to side with him :D

Chalk up another one for the Blacksmiths. It was a hectic run with the orb, with Xom apparently actively trying to kill me and very nasty demons every step of the way. Decks are really good now, saved me twice from certain death.
