Sonic (old school) alike games?
« on: November 02, 2015, 02:46:20 pm »

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Not like the new bullshit saniks, I want old school sonic (the sonic 3 & knuckles era) stuff.

Fangames, clones, similar stuff. You run around in fluid platforming, kill baddies and preferably squish an obese mad scientist with an oversized moustache.

I think I derped on the OP. I already played most of the decent stuff for genesis and SNES, I spent a large portion of my childhood playing with those bootleg "450 genesis/SNES games + emulator" CDs. :P

I'm particulary interested in new stuff? (free projects, new platformers like freedom planet, etc)

I really want that one as a "when". I want "grubs", and "virgin woman" to turn into a dragon. and monkey children to suddenly sprout wings. And I want the Dwarven Mutant Academy to only gain their powers upon reaching puberty. I also have a whole host of odd creatures that only make sense if I divide them into children and adults.

Also, tadpoles.

Freedom Planet is heavily based on old-school sonic and is very well-regarded.

This.  Also a huge number of Genesis games in general tried to be Sonic clones, with varying degrees of success.  Go to GameFAQs and do a search on Genesis platformers.  Just stay away from Awesome Possum.

Off the top of my head you could try Aero the Acrobat, Tinhead, Zool, Bubsy (NOT 3D) though I haven't played any of those so I don't know how good they are.

There were some Sonic games on the Game Gear that were different than their Genesis counterparts too.

Aero the acrobat was just awful (it was so bad I'm traumatized and remember its badness), bubsy was meh too. I re-worded my OP a bit, forgot to state I'm looking for new stuff that plays like old school.

Well i don't know if you can all it new but Rocket Knight got a new game in 2010.
Can't comment on it's quality tho because for some weird reason it is blocked for EU steam users but the reviews seem to be positive.

There were also several Sonic type clones made for the Amiga, but some of them were cross-platform too.

Take a look at Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams and its Rise of the Owlverlord stand alone expansion; the gameplay is different from Sonic's, but the pacing feels similar.

As for Sonic fan games, look up Sonic Before the Sequel and Sonic After the Sequel, both are very high quality classic style Sonics (doesn't quite get the physics right, but very close) and sport excellent soundtracks.
