"Greetings, my fine rooted fellows!  If I have committed a transgression in some way, I can assure you it was completely unintentional.  How can I make it up to you in a way that would leave us all satisfied?  Perhaps our relations can turn over a new leaf?"  [[CRITICAL PUN]]

You brace for combat, bringing up your staff, but as you do so, the tree’s leaves start to rustle - it sounds almost like a chuckle. A whisper of a voice threads through the air into your ears.

”Well done, but you see, we’re a bit burned out at the minute. We’re prepared to leave you be, but only if you match our offer and do likewise. Wood you be so kind?”

But there's laughter and oh there is love, just past the edge of our fears.
And there's chaos when push comes to shove, but it's music to my ears.

All fanfics are heresy, each and every one, especially the shipping ones. Those are by far the worst.

The trees seem to.... nod, almost, all in union, and the whisper returns.

"Would you care to extinguish us then?"

You start to take off your cloak before you notice an itching in your bladder. So with a shrug, you whip it out. Trees wouldn't even know, right? And they don't. Once the fire is out, one of the trees moves in - they shuffle about on their roots - and scoops up the charred wood in its branches.

Once this is done, the rest start to retreat, wordlessly, but you call after them:

"Do you know where the trolls are?"

They seem to freeze, and reply:

"Are you a lost child of theirs? You look like one. The trolls are mosswards of here, on the edges of the mountains. If you like, one of our number might show you the way?"

You recall, moss grows on the north side of trees, shockingly in the directions of the mountains.
