Hi all,

Is there any way to get actually neat pretty handwriting...? I've tried writing slower and paying more attention, but all that does is make my handwriting more legible. It doesn't actually look neat, because the same letter in one word to the next looks a liiittle bit different and placed slightly higher or lower, or stuff like that. I always feel so jealous of my friends who have so neat writing...

This is how I learned cursive. We wrote our letters over and over again, dozens of times each letter each day. Old nuns are tough as nails. My cursive writing teacher was Ms Valentine and she was in her 70's. She had been a nun since her late teens. I was still in a time of corporal punishment and this was 2nd grade.


My paper was beige. I also had a slate and chalk.

Write slower and more deliberately, then slowly try and increase the speed? That's the only way I can image you'd be able to work it.

What you describe seems like a hint of motor dysgraphia ( Teh wikiz ). I suffer of that myself, no matter how much I struggle (or how many angry nuns tried to teach me) my letters never, ever, come out uniform, I make mistakes all the f time time and whenever I write a slightly bigger passage in cursive I'd end up with awful cramps and pain in my hand. I just gave up and haven't written in cursive in years. My print writing is a little less shitty and people can at least understand what I'm writing (being a doctor that's a wee bit important), still a page full of my writing can harm one's sanity as much as looking at cthulhu's butt.

Meh. Medical school ruins your handwriting anyway.

Not that mine was any good to begin with. I only began to understand my own notes when I started carrying a netbook to class. Even today I'd rather jot down stuff in my tablet or cellphone than on paper. I even bought a special lightweight USB keyboard that I can fit in my white coat's pocket along with my 7' tablet.

That is the sole reason i just said fuck it and went through medschool note free. Can't understand my own notes, i read printed text amazingly fast it os easier to just read the whole book chapter or paper than revising on notes.

I basically can't write to any degree of legibility and suffered some very literal pain and the hands of my educators trying to fix it. Suffice it to say that I doubt improvement is really possible for an adult.

Directed physical therapy for the hand and wrist might be of help (differently from just straining yourself on calligraphy books), where to find a physiotherapist who does the stuff might be tricky unless you live in a big city. I have global problems with poor coordination, I had wondrous results with Pilates for my balance and such, I assume writing might be the same stuff.

Handwriting is an art. Practice practice practice. That's all there is to it. You're just making straight and curved lines.

Hand me some college ruled paper and sharp pencil and I'll write 3-4 lines inside a line. Your instructor allows one page of handwritten notes? I'll copy everything in from the semester. Terrible way to do it, but sometimes it works. You should know most of it. Concepts at least. Just write specifics in short hand and make it clean and neat. Lots of practice needed.

I gave up when the end result was still barely readable and gave me an awful wrist pain. win-win. On related fact, I'm suddenly very happy I didn't have an eldery nun as my writing teacher. Things would have been much more painful and fruitless.

On the plus side I was ahead in Math when I got to public middle school. Extra knowledge beaten into you.

Try writing bigger to start with. You could also try tracing over the script you want to emulate, start as slow as needed to get the line perfect, then get that going faster.
