Pit zone designation

Is the bottom of the pit the area to be designated as a pit zone, or the top where the hatches are?

You designate pits in empty space next to a floor where the dwarf doing the pitting can stand.  As you designate the zone, you will see "Pit/Pond (0)" grayed out if there is no valid pitting in the zone, and "Pit/Pond (#)" in white with a number in the parentheses if pitting can be done.  You only need 1 tile.

Ok, thanks.
Finally managed to designate a pit zone over my training area.
Had one squad training while another squad oversaw the cage-to-pit operation by a civilian.
No caged undead even reached the hatch; they were killed immediately my the melee squad, so I have no idea yet if I'm doing it right.

You did it correctly, but the fact that your squad attacked means that the prisoner escaped custody immediately upon release.  That happens a lot.
