Siege engine targeting
« on: October 31, 2015, 12:57:35 pm »

I built a catapult and a ballista outside my fortress on the surface, as a test, facing two groups of goblin and undead besieging my fortress.

I set them up to be facing the general direction of the groups and set them to fire at will.

Trouble is, so far the catapult operator is not targeting any undead; he just fires directly to the East from the catapult with the stone making a trail of destruction along the direction of fire.
The stones are not misses it seems, they are traveling along the exact same path every time: directly east and some 10 tiles south of where the undead are milling about.
How do I get him to actually target the undead, rather than fire at nothing?

You have to make the enemies move in the path of the fire, not the other way around. For the time being siege engines are virtually useless at firing at enemies in the open, unless they are campers. Thus, you have to get the enemies to come in a line towards you, typically by building/digging a tunnel. Also note that siege engines can not fire at anything at a different Z level.
Finally, siege operator skill matters in that if it's low the arrows/boulders will veer off the target course, which may be beneficial at times.
