I hate pseudotech that tries to be actual tech.
Hard-light?  Sure.  Material Emancipatoon Grilles, why not.  Heck, that could just be a self-destruct.  But a FREQUENCY SCANNER that does structural analysis, NO.  NO NO NOPITY NO NOPE.  Alternatively, you could have just used the radio to raise the ship AI or something.
