"I dreamt that a ninja paladin kidnapped Eirika so someone could stuff her full of robot parts. And I couldn't help because someone kidnapped me and was torturing me and I couldn't help afterwards because I was missing an arm but I could still cut people with the stump. Oh, and there was this guy complaining about teenagers and how he'd never understand why the cosmic gods of the universe always chose them for things. Then it shifted to memories of when I hung out with this huntress set to Mariachi music."

"I'm still not sure of our role in all of this. I get the whole 'Save the Multiverse' thing but there has to be more than just us. Are we the Vanguard or just some periphery auxiliary force?"

"The others seem unsure of it themselves. Guess the answers lie in that ship if it can travel between these worlds. But something is bugging me, can those things really destroy the Multiverse? They can be killed by us, right? So if even our attacks can harm them, how could they live or eat inhospitable universes? Universes where maybe even the laws of physics or universal constants make our attacks pale in comparison? Wouldn't those always survive?"

[SOLDIER First]

".....What is a robot?"

"In this case think artificial human parts. But normally they're kind of like... golems but with something perfectly explainable instead of magic."

[SOLDIER First]

".....Golems..?"

"... Not living things that move with magic."

[SOLDIER First]

"Hm."

"Vertex attack?"

"N-no..."

"From what I've heard, one of the major abilities consistent throughout many if not all types of Verticies is their ability to assume the qualities of organisms and other prominent figures and substances located throughout the various multiverses. So maybe they're able to adapt to whatever environment they are in?If that's the case, it's no wonder why they'd be so powerful. I'm still not sure if the Vertex are truly sentient or just some sort of entropy."

[Empiricist]

I would have said sentience. If they were mindless manifestations of a concept, a tendency, a law, then they'd have won with such a huge advantage. Only sentience could cause such ineptitude. Not that I said that out loud of course.
"It sounds more like they're forced to, and there are still unknown limitations! ^__^ Otherwise, they should be winning much more easily. A single blackhole appearing here would devour the world and none of us could stop it, and I don't see any. Or maybe it's like a virus? It's just a swarm of copies, many flawed, but a few lucky ones can spread to another world and make more. A few lucky ones that, if stopped, will avert a whole war. And even if they could adapt to the universe, since everyone's own powers work, their adaptations might make them more vulnerable to things that aren't in that world. Things that they'd have no reason to adapt to."

"N-no..."

"Oh.  I highly suggest being as ready as one gets for that...  There's probably time to get you something to keep you safe and whatnot.  But first, I did bring you a coffee."

The door opens a crack, and a pale, trembling hand extends through the gap.

Alanis looks at the hand for a second.

"...I know you've said no enough times already, but...Are you sure nothing's wrong...?  I'm just kind of worried about you..."

She then carefully places the cup of coffee in Sandra's hand.  It is at an optimal drinking temperature.

"F-fine... b-better now."

Mio stands up at the head of the table.
"Alright. Everyone here, do we know what we're facing?"
