Possible solution to the meta issue, in regards to Alan: Retcon him into being from an Earth where most of the represented content doesn't exist? Then he can still be Genre Savvy without being meta.

That's fair enough. Genre Savvy is what the likes of Mio and Ian are.

Voiding the ability to utilize the backstory IS voiding the backstory.  If you can do nothing with it it is pointless to have it in the first place.

It's like telling a scholarly archetype that no, NONE of the books they've ever encountered have had ANYTHING about an entire country, not even legends or rumors.

I agree with you, what I did with Metroid was entirely unjustifiable.

However, I'm NOT DOING THAT and DIDN'T do that after the Metroid plot.

Also, there were exactly two incidents of more than surface meta-ing (defined as: names), the one which pissed everyone off most recently being precipitated by another player outright breaking the fourth wall to complain about not having an avatar.

Except that was a joke, and ultimately won't be repeated (and if it is, then kj will get a lashing from me as well), whereas Alan's meta-ing HAS been repeated, is meant to be entirely serious, and is basically going to stay with him because of the aforementioned backstory.

Like I said, you will have to convince San to convince me, because I'm not feeling particularly reasonable right now.

At least how I wrote it, Alanis is, herself, complaining that Ian gets away with complaining about stuff that doesn't exist, when she got yelled at, by everyone, possibly including Ian although I don't remember, for drawing connections between a game universe and where she currently was and drawing a mostly logical conclusion.
