Connections/portals.....not so much. WAY too easy just to call in reinforcements into a fight. It'd probably be better to have someone from Al-Rama upgrade the ship.

That assumes that Al-Rama has a reason to send in reinforcements. In a worse-case scenario they'd close the portal at their end and leave everyone to their fate, so that they don't lose their mobile base. In a better-case scenario they'd just leave the PCs to deal with the threat and so converse their resources. It's non involvement either way. _{Plus I want everyone to appreciate the time and hard effort gone into my NPCs, damn it.}

Eh, just increase the weapon damage per level or RES bonus.

Leveling up equipment usualy ups it's damage or RES, and adds an upgrade slot. Example: If you had a weapon with 1d12 damage, it would then be 1d14 at level 2. 1d16 at level 3, and so on.
