Action: Begin poking the man until he wakes up. Or is he dead?
The elf appears to be alive.

After around half a minute of prodding, he mumbles into the mud, "...please don't kill me."

"Indeed." She says, beginning to walk with him. "Do you... know what happened? All I remember of last night is fire and screaming, before I woke up in a ruin."
"Ah, yea. There were a few men in armor with axes, an' they were burnin' an' pillagin' an'... r... gh..."

Brixom's face momentarily scrunches up in rage. He grumbles something just barely loud enough for you to hear, but you're not sure he realizes how loudly he's speaking.

"... If... if I ever meet any one o' them... I'm going to kill them."

"Could... could you please take me to my house... or at least wha's left o' it? It's... it's on the other side o' town..."

Upon seeing the man said wake up, Nix grumbles "Great, now we can't ro-" before realization strikes him like a bolt of lightning.
He quickly helps the man up, brushing the mud off, and extends a cheery hand. "Hello! I am Nix Box of Box, Tiger, Voice and Associates, Rescuers Incorporated. We noticed that you were in a spot of trouble, so we took the liberty of stepping in on your behalf. We'll get to our bill in a minute, but first things first. Are you hurt?"

Kira nods, and begins following his directions to the house. "Perhaps there are other survivors."

Of course, Twin is neither man nor woman but an unholy eldritch abomination like every other Bay12er. The difference is they hide it better.

Sokratei decided to play along-these sort of random japes were really good for her mood.

"...Yeah, what he said-I'm Sergeant Sokratei, Captain Nix's second in command-but, first in fashion. And our large feline friend over here is Elite Special Operations Tiger Tama from the 'Man Mangler' Unit. She only mangles bad men, though! And sometimes, unlucky ruminants...

Also-It's the old cliche, if we wanted to kill you'd already be dead. If you're alive, can you also tell us why they were after you? And what happened to this place, if you know? That'd be a great help! We've been sitting around for awhile now."

Nix hides a quick, nervous glance at the tiger under a sneeze.

"I--uh--thank you. My head is a bit sore, but... I'm fine."

"I... I can tell you what happened."

The elf picks himself up. His blue eyes look you all up and down, but he somehow remains unfazed by Tam's imposing appearance.

"I'm... I'm a mercenary by trade; my specialty is tracking down targets. A group of men hired me to track somebody. I agreed; it's my job, after all. I told them he was in this town, so... they torched it. I tried to back out when I saw their methods, but... there were too many of them. They forced me to track him at swordpoint. Their leader said he was a general of some kind... I hope I'm not held accountable for all of this..."

"You guys showed up just in time, actually... he's in that house over there, that you,"
he points at Tradok, "came out of. I can smell him... he has a very distinct scent..."

You are incapable of picking out a single, unfamiliar scent among the various city smells (and the smell of ashes.)

Nix's stomach dropped. This wasn't a bandit raid. Nix understood bandits. Bandits had clear lines of cause and effect; desperate people drive to crime, organizing under a charismatic leader. Nix had been on both ends of a bandit's knife and should have put two and two together a while ago. Bandits were predictable and didn't slaughter and raze towns.
But this wasn't banditry. This was international politics. Nix had a very strict policy about not getting involved with international politics. Nationstates had long memories, deep pockets, armies, and an intense hatred for people who walked on both sides of the law. People like him.
Still, a general might fetch a high reward...
He lifts his left arm up for Merle to hop onto, and murmurs to the raven. "Get my horse." The raven caws an affirmative, and takes flight, swooping back to town. Nix turns to his new co-workers, beaming.
"Well, my associates, it seems that we have another customer!"
With that, he turns and strides off towards town.
Merle retrieves the horse, Nix investigates the tracker's mark.

"I'm not a guardsmen, and I'm not going to arrest you. I'd make yourself scarce before anyone else does...unless you wanna stick with us. We're not hiring now-or maybe we are, I dunno-but, we can stick together till we get out of here.

Also, I hope you got paid in advance...so, what's your name fella?"
She said, trying a smile. In truth, it was sort of weak-the atmosphere of ashes and destruction was depressing even her usually ebullient spirit. Still, he had nice eyes. Really nice.

Tam sniffed, seeing if she could pick up said distinctive smell.

"You think he slept through it all?" She asked to the side, watching Tam sniff the air. She knew the Tigers sense of smell was amazing-the Tiger could pick up what Sokratei had eaten for dinner two nights before just by the stains on her shirt....she briefly wondered if the man was a Lycanthrope too. A powerful sense of smell was not something you could usually train-you were born with it. "If he's holed up in there, he might be behind some sort of defenses and traps...remember to let me go first, Tama-you don't want to run into another shrinking sigil, do you?" She said, nuzzling the Tigers ear. Though in truth, Tama could handle most physical traps by pure cussedness-Magical traps, however...Sokratei remembered the day they had explored the old Halfling Wizards hole in the ground. She had to outrun the Guardsmolemen, while carrying a Tiger in her pocket...

He lifts his left arm up for Merle to hop onto, and murmurs to the raven. "Get my horse." The raven caws an affirmative, and takes flight, swooping back to town. Nix turns to his new co-workers, beaming.

Merle retrieves the horse, Nix investigates the tracker's mark.

"Yeah, but in what capacity? Normally I'd be interested in how much this fellow might be worth to someone...but, it's pretty clear the people who want him, don't want him intact, and they are pretty sloppy when it comes to choosing henchmen. I doubt we'll get much of a contract from people who drop roofs on random folks and burn down entire towns for their jollies. In any case-I generally don't like to track, kill, or kidnap people without being promised to be paid-in advance... (~she says, not unkindly, jerking a thumb at the elf)

You maybe think he needs bodyguards? I'd say he might be in the market..."
She said, looking around at the destruction with a frown.

Action: Follow the tiger to the General!

The Tiger gave an indignant growl at the mention of the shrinking rune, though she didn't move away from the scritches. They'd agreed not to mention that embarrassment again. Still, she could see the horned girl's mood was dropping, so the tiger rose up and licked her face before giving her a triumphant - for a tiger - look.

It was only partly in retaliation for mentioning that particular story.

Nix, rolling his eyes like bowling balls on the side, smiles a jolly affirmative.

Your raven flies off to fetch your horse. You follow the others into the building.
Action: Follow the tiger to the General!
"so, what's your name fella?"
As you walk into the building after your extensive monologue, he half-shouts, "It's, uh, Arthfael..."

In the back room of the house, a bearded man in strange, white, leathery armor is breathing somewhat heavily. As he walks in, he looks at you and his eyes widen. He speaks to you in a refined, yet gruff, voice:
"S-stay back! I-I'm no pushover, I'll have you know!"
