Am I allowed to be a vehicle driver?

That was going to be a question to the group as a whole if we wanted the unit to stay as a pure mech force, or become a combined arms force with vehicles and VTOLs.

If you want to play one, you'll be our first recruited vehicle driver, but your chances of survival are going to be somewhat lower - vehicles simply aren't as powerful as mechs, and have a lot more chances of dying messily due to hits causing critical effects more easily.

*edit*

Also, it might be a while before vehicles become playable. The starting unit will be mech-only, and before we can salvage vehicles into the vehicle forces, we'll need to get lucky and acquire some veteran/elite vehicle techs to get the hulks working again.

It isn't SO much that they aren't as "powerful" as mechs, in fact one could argue they are a little "more powerful", so much that they are extremely fragile, are extremely death prone, and are no where near as adaptable as the vast majority of mechs. There is a LOT to forgive when using vehicles. I like to treat vehicles as more of a specialist.

I've always kind of said that MechWarrior is a universe where the laws of physics is different in such a way as to make mechs not only viable but preferable to most vehicles.

If it makes it any easier can I make my guy a Quad specialist? I actually like Quads >_>

I agree with you that vehicles still still be quite deadly - it's why I don't run the double enemy vehicle lances rule. But the rules do make them very fragile indeed, which is less good on our side where it costs the unit quite a bit if vehicles keep getting shot out from under us.

For the record, I quite liked how Heavy Gear treated vehicles and mechas (in the first game at least, the only one I played.) Even in an Assault Gear, you don't go face to face against a Main Battle Tank and expect to live through the process. You either snipe it at range from cover, or get close with cover and take a snub cannon to it.  But the mecha there are only twice-three times human size.

I'm fine with that. Roll as standard. on a roll of 2-11, you'll end up with a Scorpion. On a roll of 12, you'll have a Goliath. Unfortunately, the rest of the quad designs in the game are Clan or about two decades to a century down the road.

Oh, and as aside to anyone still looking to create a character for the initial company, while working on the next episode, I generated the mechwarrior templates, and after accounting for the bios of the already submitted characters, the three remaining mechwarrior slots are all Green characters. After the company is filled up, any additional characters will join through the in-game hiring process, when we happen to come across mechwarriors looking to be hired.

We ended up with two veteran templates, 3 regular templates, 5 green and two ultra-green templates. Overall, we're not exceptionally skilled yet, but a few campaigns should solve that.

That said, I'm also stoked at the interest this Let's Play has generated!

I could never get behind the quad mechs. I probably was using them wrong, but they just seemed like they were too-fragile.

Thst being said, I'm interested to see what initial contracts are generated for us :)

Pretty please make sure not to pick one where enemies are Elite :D

I would like us all to survive at least one contract :P If we can't though, feel free to use Anvil to cover your asses as you retreat. I mean, it's a Shadow Hawk :P Expendable :P

I even have some last words, to be said mildly cynically over comms moments before death!

"Remember my fondly."

Hey, the SHD-2K is awesome in the succession wars as it carries the PPC... Though yeah, other than it, the Shadow Hawks only become good after 3068 and the SNPPC-wielding SHD-11CS.  ;)

Well, at some point we'll be highly rated enough to have access to full on factory facilities, IS2 and Clan tech. You can do a lot to a Shadow Hawk with those factors. (Replace the AC/5 with a Clan Gauss Rifle, for example...)

Whoa, I guess I've never really plumbed the depths of the AtB or MekHQ system :) I'm really looking forward to seeing how you use it :)

Name: Kevin Collider
Callsign: Neonivek
Age: 32
Birthdate: July 20th
Gender: Male

Nation of Origin: Free Worlds League

Bio:
Born into a middle class family who worshipped academics over all else he started out as a engineer spending years of his life designing and improving mech designs and loadout to meager success. Soon though he gained a passion for the quadmechs and became absorbed in them until finally leaving the institute to pilot one in the battlefield. He isn't a rather successful pilot all things considered, his naïve attitude and over-moral outlook tends to rub other mercenaries the wrong way, as well his low success rate means few would hire him. Using his connections he managed to weasel his way into his current company.

He treats his mercenary outfit a bit too chummy and too often goes into the more esoteric designs. He is an odd mix of friction and comradely,

Roll 2d6 (A dice roller can do so): (4)
Roll 1d1000 (you can use Random.org to do so): 468
1d12 (for Quad): (8, which means scorpion)

---

Would have loved being an Engineer but I have a feeling it wouldn't be as interesting. No interesting moves.

THAT and there is no light quads to my knowledge. At least none that I think people would find usable.

Not yet, at least. the Tarantula becomes available in 3054, but the Clan light quad is a second-line design to a Home Clan, so the chances we'll ever see one is minimal.

Generally I don't post after myself, but I was busy working on the next updates today. I'll set a timelimit of this Sunday for the last two player characters for the initial company, after that any submissions will join the unit through the in-game recruitment system.

I rolled up the two (potential) NPCs using the in-development 'life module' system in the newest AtB rules to generate their inital lives - One ended up being an ex-Maskirovika agent who got burned and was watching her career spiral into the crapper with worse and worse assignments. The other is a young Davion dropout from the military academy who hasn't amounted to much yet. I sort of imagine him as a slacker pothead. With a mech. >_>
