Macabre Mood trouble
« on: October 27, 2015, 11:24:58 am »

My large and bustling fortress, due to repeated exposure to the magma-bound corpses of our enemies, has for several years slumped into a general state of depression and tantrums.  This has led to my first Macabre Mood ever!

The darkly brooding dwarf has claimed a butcher shop, and gathered a stack of bones, a skull, and three vermin remains.  He is still asking for silk and yarn cloth, both available, but also "things... certain things."  I figure that he still needs something lugubrious.  There are plenty more body parts to be had: the problem is that I only have 1 cat (who is somebody's pet) and there are no more vermin remains available.  Would he need more than 3?  What else could it be?  And, if so, is there a way to kill vermin without cats?

He is not in a burrow, so no problems there.  I'd be sad to waste this mood and sad to lose a fortress-born adult.

The most likely candidates are Skull & Vermin Remains.  Check your refuse pile for skulls.  If those are available, he probably does need more critter bits, in which case you'll just have to hope the Cat kills a few.  A moody Dwarf can last 2-3 weeks before going loopy, so you have time.

Thank you.  There are skulls around, so it's probably more vermin remains.

I've noticed that there is one dead hamster very far away in the depths of the second cavern, which is walled off and roamed by a forgotten beast... do I dare to remove a wall and let him make a run for it?

There is 1 more trick you can try; create a small food stockpile on the surface and pasture the Cat within.  That is the fastest way I can think of to attract vermin.  Just make sure your (O)rders menu has outside refuse hauling turned on.

Breaching the 3rd cavern layer will also cause an explosion of creepy crawlers in food stockpiles. Highly recommended.

I always wondered why there seemed to be so damn many of the things.

I tunneled immediately down to the magma sea upon embark, so the third cavern layer has been breached for many years.  I haven't seen a single creepy crawler -- lots of fire snakes, though.

Nobody was taking the cat to the pasture, so I ended up unplugging the second cavern for that dead hamster.  The macabro went immediately in that direction, but went insane before getting to it.  I didn't know that was possible!
