Moss Not Growing On Muddy Obsidian Floor
« on: October 26, 2015, 12:33:51 pm »

The title is fairly self-explanatory: in-game years ago, I dumped a lot of water on some magma and the resulting obsidian cavern floor has been covered in mud ever since. However, nothing has ever grown on it. Is something weird going on, or do wild plants never grow on obsidian ever? If i can't get moss to grow on an obsidian floor, then I'm going to have to slaughter all my grazers.

Use 'k' and cursor over the tile, does it actually have nothing growing on it, or does it say something to the effect of 'muddy cave moss'?  A muddied tile generally doesn't visually display grass/moss/ground cover, only actively displaying if there is an actual plant growing on it instead.

I have double checked, and they were all muddy floors with no moss on them. Having piles of mud on them would not prevent anything from growing, right?

IIRC, you can farm on mud, but wild plants and grass only grow on soil floors like sand and loam.

I'm afraid you do not recall correctly on that.  Muddy floors, as long as they aren't smoothed first, will support all kinds of cave moss, gatherable underground plants, saplings, and, given the height to grow, underground trees.

I seem to recall reading before that there are problems with muddy obsidian and wild growth.  Are you able to build farm plots on it?

Haven't tried, but I put a designation for a plot over it and it seemed just fine. For the record, these tiles are no longer directly adjacent to any magma.
