"So, short version, this tea stuff is neck deep in tradition where you're from."

Alice unbuckled the slim sword from her belt,
"Which one of you wants it more?"

: "Ultimately, yes. I never much cared for tradition, but I do see merit in this particular ceremony. Such that I still keep these with me." Lian gestured at the clay tea set in general, finally managing enough sparks to ignite the dry brush, "I only hope that this water isn't foul enough to dilute the flavor. This is the last set of leaves I have, but hopefully I can resupply near the Pahravanit border."

"Boss probably needs it more, since his only weapon is nearly broken and I still have two decent weapons."

Chalco nodded at Galen as he placed the bucket down.
"Ah. Good work."

He dipped a small folding cup into the bucket, before taking out a small wooden straw and using it to take a sip. That done, he sat back slightly and regarded the tea-making.

"Tradition is good. Such things build civilisation, after all."

[SOLDIER First]

Galen nervously returns the nod.

"Yeah, can't contribute without a blade."

"Tradition for the sake of tradition isn't always a good thing. Some traditions are bad." Santoku folded his arms across his chest, regarding the growing flames.

Lian watch the kettle carefully, as if regarding each individual wisp of steam that slowly rose out of it. On hearing Chalco and Santoku speak, however, she chuckled.
: "Precisely. If you were to ask me, 'tradition' is only useful when it provides a modicum of understanding between disparate peoples. If it fails to do so much as that, or worse force arbitrary differences, it becomes beyond useless."

"If you try hard enough you can."

"Hmmph. I won't pretend all traditions are helpful, but they do far more good than not."

Santoku turned his head and stared at Chalco. "That right? You can't think of a single tradition this world would be better off without?" Santoku's anger was clear in his tone.

[SOLDIER First]

"...I heard there was a village somewhere where none of the women were allowed to become fighters, or anything."

Chalco returned Santoku's gaze, mildly confused at his sudden anger and apparent inability to hear.
"I just said not all traditions are helpful, did I not? Of course there's some traditions held by barbarians and whatnot that should be stomped out, but I'm talking about civilisation."

Santoku stood up, fists at his sides. "If you don't know what you're talking about, you really oughta keep your mouth shut." The swordsman pulled his jacket off, letting it hang in his left hand.

"Lemme ask you something. Can you tell me what this is?" As he spoke, Santoku turned his back on Chalco, and pointed his thumb at an old, flame shaped burn mark. A brand.
