You could control more then 1 character, each in different realms.  Free players I think can have 3 active characters or something, with 3 settlements each active character. 
I'm only playing with 2 active characters right now, 1 of them doing absolutely nothing at all.

Do dead characters count against your character limit? I notice that it's possible to create characters that are "pre-dead" in order to get a family tree going.

Dead are dead and do not count toward your limit. 
I have 3 characters total, 1 is dead, the dead doesn't count toward my limit.

Now I'm running around kicking inactive members out of some of their estates, I guess. That's one way to become a lord!

I started playing as a bandit character on the side. I've already attacked and raided one settlement, now I'm initiating battle with some nobles after sending a (deliberately) poorly-typed threatening message extorting them for gold or whatever they've got.

Tis quite fun.

If anyone is interested in a bit of action, my character Li Jue in Blood Cloaks is stirring some stuff up in the West and has a 65 soldier knight offer that's been up for 2 days for anyone that wants it. No spoilers here as to exactly who the target is, but it is going to make the West a little bit more exciting and will definitely give the children some target practice if they want to join in.
