Heavy cavalry are basically the best thing. The best. Grimbarth and Sarden just annihilated a 25% larger force with only twelve casualties, thanks to having an army composed two thirds of heavy cavalry. Some of mine got four kills in the battle, which is fearsome.

We'll probably get into a war sometime soon, but not right this moment. I'm between settlements due to chasing a bandit, of course, so I guess if you really just want to plunge straight into battle you could start in Saecumen and meet up with me.
