Sadly, the exact workings are currently unknown to the ukron. They would suspect fusion, anti-matter, or - which might be most probable - something unkown to them. As for the result, it goes "boom". The sudden expansion of some sort of matter, creates a shockwave, which results in a great deal of destruction in the surrounding area.
On a more game-play kind of note, the bombs that have been used by the "Defilers" in the last invasion, were loosened in the upper atmosphere. I am quite sure that battles will play out on a grid, and in case of an attack naariv will also be visible, together with the "Wardens". The atmosphere should be 2-3 tiles thick, and if one of the Defilers enters as far, they can then attack ground targets that are somewhat close to them.
