Civilian pathing through warrens
« on: October 19, 2015, 05:20:46 am »

I set up a warren for the civilians with access to the Trade Depot along a corridor.
When the Traders arrive during a time of danger I can get the civilians inside and the Traders have access to the depot across a bridge which I close behind them.

However, when I give the order to the civilians to deliver bins to the Trade depot, they ignore the path through the safe warren area and go straight across the forbidden area outside their warren area.
How can I restrict the civilians to travel only through the safe warren area?

Build pathways that block off those areas? Warrens don't restrict pathing, only whether or not the dwarf can do a task. They can't accept tasks outside their warren, but they can path through those areas if it's faster to get to their destination.

I just had a "lord consort" visit and decide to stay. Preparing for Trojan war reenactment.
Protip: statues cannot be made out of wood unless they're artifacts. If you see what appears to be a wooden statue outside your fort and it's not an artifact, destroy it immediately.

You have to block access to the path you don't want them to take. Locked doors or raised drawbridges can achieve that. As FortunaDraken said, burrows only restrict dorfs to take jobs whose materials and targets are all inside the burrows, but will happily path outside between these points (this also makes a disjoint burrows pointless in most cases).
If you're lucky you can use traffic restrictions ('d'-'o' I think) to mark the undesired path as Restricted. That only works if the desired path is sufficiently short such that the increased cost of taking the direct path is higher than taking the desired one. You can also help this along by lowering the pathing cost along the desired path. I very rarely use traffic restrictions, though, since they usually fail to keep dorfs away from where the definitely shouldn't be.

The only way to confine civilians to a burrow is to activate a civilian alert.
