I'll flesh this out and add images later, I don't have a lot of time.
Journal of Dragoni Gatescoured, Overseer of Workclench

We’ve all seen what’s been going on with Origamiscienceguy, our expedition leader. He’s been wandering around the fortress muttering about chert and some kind of choice for months now, but no one’s done anything about it, since he’s been a decent enough leader.
Until last night.
I don’t know why, and nobody I talked to seems to know why either, but last night as the calendar changed from 125 to 126, the entire fortress awoke a once- exceot for Origamiscienceguy.
We could hear him from our own rooms, screaming the word “both” over and over again for several minutes until he abruptly fell silent.
That was the moment everyone agreed that something had to be done.
I was appointed to be the fortresses’ new overseer—unsurprising since my family is a full third of our population.
18 dwarves, six of them children, live in Workclench, now my responsibility. I pray I am up to the task.

I spent yesterday examining the fort not as a resident, but as a leader. The first thing that is readily apparent is just how small this place is- seven tiny floors(not counting stairs and ramps), each only 100 square urists at most.
We will definitely need to expand, both for living space and for storage.
Another thing I’ve noticed is that we have veins of Hematite and Galena running throughout the fort, yet have them untapped. Iron is one of the most crucial materials for a developing fortress, and silver is wonderful for trade goods and hammers.
The only wildlife I can see from the surface is a single Giant Hampster, which shouldn’t be a problem unless other, less benevolent giant creatures appear.
I’ve told the farmers to grow pig tails on half the fields during summer and autumn, to use for ropes and clothes. Plump helmets are nice, but they won’t do everything.

Elven traders have arrived, and going through our stocks, we have nothing to trade them! Our stonecrafter is currently making amulets, rings, and figurines as fast as she can.

A massive group of migrants has arrived from the mountainhome.
It consists of four Farmers, a Bowyer, a Gelder, two Glazers, a Lye Maker, a Cheese maker, a Fishery Worker, a Farmer, a Engraver, a Gem Cutter, and Two peasants, one of which has experience with a Warhammer. Together, they brought fourteen of their children.
Our total population now stands at fourty-eight, twenty of them children.

Our stonecrafter, one Sodel Mirrorportal, has finally completed the goods we need to trade with the elves. Among other things, we are now the proud owners of a tame war jaguar!

Three of the dwarves that arrived with the migrant wave have military experience, and they asked me today for weapons and a place to train. One of them has a rather impressive track record,
So I’ve assigned him as military commander. A barracks is being dug out as I write this, and they’ll have their weapons as soon as our forge in completed.

The elves have left, and I’ve ordered the dining hall expanded to accommodate the new residents.

Our lye maker started frothing at the mouth and yelling about stone today.
He grabbed a piece of Gneiss and a chunk of Hematite and ran into one of the craftdwarf’s workshops.
About time- he was scaring the children.
1 Hematite
The Lye maker stonecrafter finally emerged from the workshop, holding a ring aloft.
It’s not very impressive, but I must say, it is a Gneiss ring.
14 Hematite
Telling the miners to extract all the hematite was a mistake.
Apparently, “all the hematite” includes the hematite embedded in the ramps leading to the surface.
Now because of my stupidity, we’ve missed the human caravan.
At least we can replace the ramps before the next one comes…

We have another problem.
For the life of me, I can’t find any way to get to the surface, and neither can anyone else.
The military and a few other dwarves are likewise stranded up top.
21 Galena
It took a month and a half, but I finally found the problem.
There’s a set of downward stairs near the top of the fort that lead to nowhere. On a hunch, I had some up stairs built on top of them, and lo and behold, we found the stairwell to the surface!
22 Galena
My youngest child had been possesed.
