Dan leaned back in his chair, feet propped on the damage control console in Engineering. As Chief Mechanic (a role he had invented), there wasn't much for him to do until things started breaking.

Order some space coffee.

The probe has been launched. Now just a scan is needed to get better look at the wreckage - and the unidentified object as well.

The scan shouldn't be very hard to accomplish (difficulty: 6)

Seth's semi-jovial expression immediately darkens.
"Captain, are you seeing this? The Sardine... It's-- Unidentified ship detected, Captain!"

[Lucus Casius]

"Interesting."  The Captain rests back in his chair, crossing his legs and tapping his fingers together as he observes the visual display.  "Once again, as I suspected, we were too late to save the Sardine, and the crew is either dead or even now being worked to death in the darkness of a Blastan coal mine to power the primitive engines of ships with surprisingly advanced stealth capabilities."

"Commander Flint, assist Lieutenant Tremble and lock targeting on to their warp engine.  Lieutenant Kruse, begin collimator beam sequencing, prepare to fire on my command."

The Captain stood abruptly, resting his hands behind his straight back as he grinned proudly at the viewscreen.  "Open communications."

"Attention unknown vessel!  This is Captain Keel of the USS Excellence.  You stand accused of attack on a Spacefleet vessel, and are ordered to stand down and prepare to..."  He hesitated.  While he could probably try teleporting aboard without a teleporter lock, they would likely be alerted by the crewmembers teleported into their bulkheads or into the space around them before proper coordinates could be determined and warp away.  No matter.  "Face the swift, harsh justice of the law."

Yeah, that'd work.

"Oh gawd, what ah' we gonna do?"

There was no response.

Chief Science Officer could see on his console that... nothing was changing at the strange vessel.

No shields being raised, no energy build-up consistent with arming of weapons. Nothing at all. The unknown vessel was drifting in space just like the wreckage of USS Sardine was.

[SOLDIER First]

"They don't appear to be doing anything, Captain. Maybe they're trying to lull us into a false sense of security."

[Lucus Casius]

"Defiant silence, eh?  How dare they insult me."  The Captain flopped back down in his chair and pounded the arm with a closed fist.  "Attempting to goad me into an attack, eh?  Very clever, Blastans, very clever.  Perhaps your plan would have even succeeded, but once again, I have outsmarted you, for the first time!"

He paused for a long moment, staring at the silent, unmoving vessel on his viewscreen as it failed to respond to his rant.  Then he shut off the communications and sat in silence for a few moments longer.  Then, glancing around the bridge as anything conspicuously failed to happen, he sighed.  "I don't think there's anyone on that ship.  Helmsman, begin approach at standard speed.  Lieutenant Commander Boten, I want an immediate subspace scan on the surrounding area."

"I'm on it, Captain. Initiating maneuver "Spraying an Aerosol In A Room Most Likely Full of Laser Tripwires"!"

Daren finds himself hankering for some coffee. Unfortunately as combat is a possibility, he can't just transport it to him, so he activates the comm to the mess hall and orders a coffee

That settled, he begins a Level 4 Diagnostic

After a brief pause, the sensor operator presses the button on the PA to reply.
"My liege, there's no real need for target locking; I haven't detected any weapons disruption fields, so though I'm not a weapon operator I believe they work as normal. I am the sensor operator, anyway, not the weapons operator."
