Episode 1: New And Old

USS Excellence is on her first mission into the vast universe, currently warping toward one of the numerous sectors near the Blastan Neutral Zone...

"Captain's Log, Stardate Fifteen-Thousand and One Point One."

"Following my numerous successes as an officer upon the penal garrison planet of Verboten Four, I have been assigned command of the starship USS Excellence.  She's a good craft, with an undertrained, mediocre crew.  I intend to make full use of both.  Under my guidance, the Excellence is certain to become the most decorated ship in this quadrant."

"We have been assigned to investigate the disappearance of the USS Sardine, a scientific research vessel surveying anomalies within the gas clouds surrounding the Neutral Zone at the borders of the Blastan Empire.  Command suspects foul play.  I agree.  No doubt the duplicitous Blastans have decided to violate the armistice for their own sick amusement, and I shudder at the thought of what they might even now be doing to the crew of the Sardine, should any have survived."

"Or perhaps the gas is interfering with their communicators.  In either case, the men of the USS Excellence are prepared to investigate upon our arrival."

The captain switched off the logging device, turning his chair to face the forward view port on the bridge.  "Helmsman, prepare to deactivate warp drive upon arrival at the neutral zone.  Commander Flint, see to it that the men are prepared for the nigh-inevitable ambush by hostile ships that is sure to befall us at that point."

[Twinwolf]

Commander Sera Flint salutes her captain, and moves to a console that controls the ship's PA system.

"All crew and officers of the USS Excellence, this is First Officer Sera Flint speaking. The Captain has ordered that all crew are at their stations in preparation for a possible ambush upon arrival."

Lianna was in Engineering doing a last minute check of everything when the First Officer's voice came over the communicators. Rolling her eyes, she shook her head.

"Possible ambush, yeah, I'll believe that when I see it. Good thing I can just stay back here in engineering away from the bridge..."

[Haspen]

Engines Consoles at the bridge and in main engineering began to beep and flash an alert; sector 8248 last known region of space visited by USS Sardine, has been reached by USS Excellence!

[Swordstar]

"Right, looks like we reached our destination. Stand ready for orders probably."

[Ochita]

Agrippa nodded, eyes firmly on the screen. When it beeped and flashed, she nodded.
"We have visited the last known region of space that the USS Sardine has last occupied. Deactivating warp drive."

E: Deactivate that warp drive!

[Powder Miner]

Honoré leaned on the wall by his console as he retrieved his shortbow from the counter and started to string it together, pressing down the "reply" button on the PA with his elbow as he did so.
"Lieutenant Honoré Tremble reporting, Officer. The lookout machinery is operational, and," He finished stringing his bow, "The lookout room is secure, unless any ambushers particularly desire to take an arrow between the eyes."

The warp engine has been deactived and the ship came to a full stop.

Sensors Consoles started to beep. Sensors have detected something!

[Powder Miner]

Honore leaned over, putting his bow onto his back.
"Oh...?"
He looked at his console.

[BFEL]

Daren Aulus sat in the Transporter room, awaiting orders and fiddling with transporter settings, bringing up anomaly charts and attempting to pre-compensate for any discrepancies in the gas clouds' energy signatures

The pre-compensation was successful, even if the gas clouds located in the region wouldn't have any impact on the effectiveness of the transporters anyways.

Honoré hit the PA again, this time directly addressing the captain.
"My liege, I've got a pair of sensor readings, and they confirm the worst. The wreckage of an Explorer-class vessel, more likely than not the Sardine, riddled with damage and hit by positron blasts. Furthermore, there is a second large mass (not in our archives) a kilometer away from the wrecked Spacefleet vessel, and it is very probably the ship that destroyed the Spacefleet vessel."
He put his quiver on his hip.

Frowning as they settled in, Lianna hesitated, then decided to go with her gut. Heading to a console, she started to perform a Level 2 Diagnostics of the ship

Better safe then sorry I suppose.
