Clearly the better option is for them to fly FORWARD into the weapons.  There's a slim but nonzero chance that those areas will be less armored and, thus, more easily penetrated by their tools!

Also, it might be quicker than warming up the teleporters.

So, uh, would raising the shields (which I had thought I had done earlier but maybe that would have been a bad idea) prevent the crew from coming back?
