Sublevel Zero - Roguelite Descent 2015
« on: October 11, 2015, 03:23:50 pm »

Hey all.

I read on RPS about this "Rogue-lite spaceship game" and I noticed how it's a revival of my childhood classic, Descent. I played it when I was ~7, so I have no proper memory of it. I remember loving it, though.
Sublevel Zero it is.

Screenshots in case you have no idea what I'm talking about:

And here's the Launch Trailer.

I don't know a whole lot about the game, but here's what I know:
  • You are inside a spacestation and must destroy reactors to get components for your flux drive so you can go back home.
  • There are datalogs that tell more about the world.
  • Doing well will unlock different ships.
  • You can craft new weapons (basically, you unlock recipes with weapons you acquire, and combine them using nanites [currency] to make better weapons).
  • I almost died on the first level and died on the second level, which tells me its hard enough - just like good old Descent.
  • You can run out of ammo if you're not careful. You can die easily if you don't dodge and take cover.
  • You can change your engine and hull, just like weapons. This helps equipping the ship to suit your playstyle.
  • There's permadeath, which will send you back to the first Sublevel of a Level.

To me, it's fun and I'll probably play it casually.
It's definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but maybe someone will like it.

It honestly feels like a lot of their problems came from the fact that their entire team was composed of cats, and the people who were supposed to be herding them were also cats.

This looks awesome! I hadn't heard of it before and I loved Descent. I'd be interested to know how other people get on with it - it's had gleaming reviews but I don't know if it's just nostalgia factor or if it's actually a great game.

With enough work and polish, it could have been a forgettable flash game on Kongregate.

As a fan of Descent and Ziggurat this looks promising.

I only played for two levels, and I've been overly critical with a lot of games lately (probably burned out), so I'm refraining from reviewing things. But I did like it, even though I just played for two levels. I definitely want to play more.

However, in a time of crazy flashy games with crazy combat and huge spanning open-worlds, it feels a little weird to play around such small, almost claustrophobic, rooms and corridors.
It's a game that seriously need a demo, because there's a high chance people who don't like this sort of game will get it, while the people who like it will wait for reviews/videos/demos and never buy it. They REALLY should make a demo.

In the end, I'd say it totally depends on the player. But the game is fun and has a nice presentation as it is. I also like the looks and sounds.

If I get to later levels, I'll expand on. But these are pretty much my first impressions. :)

PS: Oh yeah, gameplay-wise, I really love how the game forces you to keep on your toes all times.
Looking at the map or opening the inventory doesn't pause the game, so you have to be aware.
Different guns also change a lot how much you'll approach or dodge your enemies. I always like that.

Played the game, had a quite good first impression but im sad becouse i won it on the 3rd run, i still have unlocks lefts but i already feel iv seen it all enemy wise. A way to improve dificulty without changing much would be putting a force field around generators until you enter the room becouse my strategy was to kill all generators (except the 3-4 one) from outside wich gets me on a preatty safe spot.

This was what I was afraid of. As much as I like and appreciate games of this sort, I often find them lacking in content.
Hmm...I'll have a think

Played my 4th game again today, won again. I really dont know what to say, the game is good and has tons of potential, but its not really a rouge like of any sorts. More of a hack and slash probably. I won this last one with the ship that starts with +2 inv and +25 HP. I only got 2 upgrades (its the downside of the ship) that i never used and still won. Dont get me wrong the game is a great base for adding stuff, it its good but it can be great i think it needs more work on the rouge like side, becouse if you take the rogue like of the game then its a singleplayer game with 5 levels(the first is basically a tutorial).

Wow, that sounds bad. Since I only played 2 levels and put it on hold, I was expecting more depth. Seemed interesting at first glance.
And I really thought the 5 levels were like the 5 parts of that particular space-station..that there were going to be more space-stations or something.

So I guess this ends up being a casual mini-game for people who like the genre? Hmph.  ::)

I was an hour in and i quickly realized i'd already hit the game's skill cap due to the low turning speed limit combined with tiny rooms and the huge spread on everything so i kind of lost interest and refunded it

Yup there's just not a whole lot to this. This game somehow reminded me of Teleglitch.
