Hey folks, hello and welcome to Amihailu's World of Magic! It's a sequel of sorts to my top-down adventure game Amihailu in Dreamland that I started on 3 October, 2015. This time Amihailu's on a magical adventure fraught with danger in the land of Tumydorado, much like the first game. However, this title has completely different gameplay and a 16 colour PC-9801 aesthetic. The game runs at 640x400 and is currently in pre-alpha.

==Features==




Current:
  • Isometric graphical projection with 16 on-screen colours out of a palette of 4096
  • Step-based RPG gameplay (like Rogue, DF, etc.)
  • Melee and Firearms combat
  • Simple keymap and UI structure
  • Granular calculation model for firearm damage that takes shot placement, target outer tissue density, type of ammunition used, and range into account
  • Overpenetration, where firing ball ammunition into a target may overpenetrate and hit an additional target somewhere in the same line of fire
  • Maps are created by hand rather than procedurally generated

Planned:
  • Magic spells and items
  • Shops and recurring characters
  • A storyline
  • Perks and combat skills system, tied to experience and customization
  • A variety of environments and unique tactical challenges
  • Cybernetic upgrades for Amihailu that do fun things
  • FM chip soundtrack

The game is meant to be simple to pick up and learn, with some degree of depth to firearms and magic to present a variety of tactical challenges over the course of the game. Amihailu and Tumydorado are very bizarre, so be prepared for things to make little sense as you meet the game's characters (including a fairy who has been turned into a cheerio).

Yesterday morning I added some new features which I'll try to finish up today:

-Auto target snapping on nearby enemies, maximum range dependent on Amihailu's hit accuracy modifier
-Reload dialog that calculates the amount of turns it will take for you to load all fired chambers and automatically chooses and displays the fastest method for reloading ammunition of the same type, e.g. two shots were fired; the game returns the 2-turn reload instead of the 4-turn reload from empty, provided you're loading the same type of ammo

Tasks needing completion:
-The actual reload methods, unfortunately won't be totally complete until AI is added because it requires the use of AI ticks
-Dialogue system with modularity for narrative messages, sparse though they may be
-More test environments with new terrain
-Inventory dialog

  • Added AI with a script that generates an "action code" which is dependent on the temperament of the AI, state, and whether it has LOS to Amihailu
  • Fixed a bug where more than one AI on the map would cause a crash when one of them died to melee
  • Fixed a bug with map warp collisions being calculated twice
  • Completed the reload system
  • Added FM+SSG sound effects for entering Fire Control mode and discharging your firearm (single-action hammer clicks, gunshots)

    From 22 October:
    • Added Liquorice's shop and new graphics for Palette A
    • Decided to ditch OPL2+effects and go with OPNA/OPN3 FM sound (like a real 86 soundboard!)
    • Discovered a bug where orthogonal movement can be used to glitch through walls
    From 23-24 October:
    • Added the dialogue handler to the message system
    • Retooled enemy melee combat processing so that being right on top of the enemy does not result in instantaneous death
    • Posted video of new OPNA/OPN3 audio

    Thanks for showing your interest, guys! I'm still working hard on the game and I hope to add the actual shop code to the game. In Liquorice's shop, experience points are used to purchase new spells and magic upgrades, but I'm open to other progression ideas that anyone thinks would be fun (such as levelling individual spells or splitting the experience pool between the three combat types to tailor your advancement to what you use the most!)

    There are two other shops that still need to be added to the game, which are Lumpee the Fairy's consumables shop and Mae Nakamun's clinic. In Lumpee's shop you buy round foods like doughnuts, tortellini, and buns to restore energy (which is used to cast magic and power cybernetics) and in Mae's clinic you'll be able to buy cybernetics and healing for grievous injuries. Each of the three shopkeepers has a little story involved and there's no doubt you'll be finding things or helping them out in the later game. But for now, I'm still getting the basics up and running.

    Exp as shop currency sounds fine by me and different enough from the typical means to be worthwhile to tinker with.

    Hey guys, sorry. I haven't had the time to really work on the game at all (work and everything) but I did recently learn the arcane art of creating ADPCM sample banks for use with the PC-98 Speak Board, so I re-orchestrated the earlier linked Dungeon theme. Check it out!

    Hah, not anytime soon I'm afraid. When I get the free time I'll be working away at it but for now I pretty much just do little bits here and there.
