Well, thorium's fairly common, so it'd basically be a matter of checking some likely-looking rocks in our general vicinity, but I don't think we can feasible build enough reactor to outdo a starship power core with as little in the way of stuff as we have.

Given the apparent geological activity in the area, geothermal might be feasible.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Turn 7 September 2110

* Digging and Drilling Machines: Mine further on the domes (48+10-10 Rain) (142/200 done)

* Exo-Skeleton Constructors: Further dome work (98+30+10-20- 10 Rain) Critical Success (205/300 done)

* Heavy Bot Mech: Construction halted converted to mining (68+5- 10 Rain) CCdomes mining done

The construction crews and factory are in really good form this month thanks to increased coordination between all parties.  Metals are stripped off the engines in time to keep the factory churning out parts while construction follows the plans to the letter, pulling completed parts off the line right as they are made and hauling them down into the pits for installation.

In many ways the construction occurs too fast for the digging machines to keep up thanks to the difficulty encountered in taking out the uneven geology.  Shortly before the first dome is completed the heavy bot is moved off construction to help expand the pumps and then cooperate in digging out space for the domes.

The rain does let up for a time, only to be replaced by high winds coming from inland, then the rains start again, stronger then before.  Work is put off for a few days until a new strategy for dealing with the effects is put in place.  The machine are set to work in close proximity to each other, carrying heavy loads together and working to install each piece rather then working independently.  The system works well enough for it to be replicated with the heavy bot and digging machines, preventing several sand slides and inundations which would have set work back.

The close work does prove stressful thanks to constant vigilance and communication and may not be viable long term, but it has great results this month.

Towards the end of the month the second dome is completed and filled in as the last of the excavation work and pump installations are done.  Underground pathways between the three domes are dug out according to the plans with a little extra work, although breaching the surface is put off until the rains stop and some kind of entrance can be built.

Rain penalty eliminated for all CCdomes this turn.  +14 bonus construction done.

Heavy bot can not work on domes due to not enough mining work done, move to mining.

2 large domes completed.

* Investigate Cryogenic Systems (89-30(basic research)) Progress

Full medical checkups are conducted on the crew and cross referenced with time in cryogenics and recorded difficulties during wake-up.  The limited facilities make research diffcult with a constant refrain of needing this or that test done, particularly several large medical scanners and a dedicated lab for growing and analyzing tissue samples.  Crew in existing tubes are monitored as well, but these show the same useless data of everything being okay.

Several different theories are put together.  One involves the repeated freezing and unfreezing causing extra damage not accounted for in the models.  Another is that the chemicals are not being eliminated in the correct times or breaking down over time leading to issues with the body being too cold or too hot in small, vital areas.  The last major theory is that damage is being done on a cellular level not visible without directly removing tissue from a living, frozen body.  The idea of a vivisection on a living, frozen crew member is left unsaid but clearly implied by the report.

The general consensus is that whatever the damage is being caused by most of it is probably already done, although a new wake-up procedure might be possible once the exact cause is discovered.  Repairing the damage and ensuring low to no risk wake up will likely require a nano-tech repair solution of some kind, which would have been considered cutting edge on Earth.

+10 to ongoing Investigate Cryogenic Systems

Live autopsy can be authorized, +30 to research, -??? moral

The recovering crew prove to have some long term health issues come up, both nerve and liver damage which will require ongoing care, but they are strong enough to work.  The closest comparisons to what might have cause the damage are high impacts, radiation exposure and hyperthermia; however, this is truly unexplored medical territory so how long the damage will last is not know.

3 crew recover, for now.  -.1 medical supplies for several ongoing medical treatments.

* Design a modular hydropower pumpturbine (68+10+20) Progress stalled

Hydropower is among the oldest industrial power sources, from grinding grain in antiquity to the Three Gorges Damn gravity driven water turbines have been the product of over a thousand years of human ingenuity.  The colony computer proves to have a variety of such designs in size and composition and Natalia spends a great deal of time categorizing them for better integration into projects by needs present on the planet.

She spends some time designing several theoretical designs for what might work with the tools available, from Pumped-storage turning the entire base into a giant battery to support solar and wind systems to a Run-of-the-river design to be built in the nearby canyon.  One in particular involves digging a tunnel from the canyon under the base and building one or more underground turbine systems to empty out near the ocean.

It is clear that one or more dams will also need to be built for long term sustainability, although using natural features could dramatically lower the time and resources needed to build a reservoir.

The one type of power that is totally out is tidal power.  The moons are far too small to create a significant tidal force.

+10 to hydroelectric power station design.

More specific design parameters needed, see exploration action for options.

* Armor kit design (59+20) Success

With access to existing designs completing the armor kit is simple.  Protection from high winds, the slightly acidic rain, sandstorms and even meteor strikes are included.  New above ground domes can also be completed with the same protections.

The basic design uses several different layers of materials applied one at a time.  A temporary airtight foam is included which can be quickly applied for a temporary fix while larger plugs are stored on site to repair any damage.  Thanks to the oxygen free atmosphere part of the outer layer reacts with free oxygen to change color temporarily, allowing leaks to be quickly detected from outside.

Armor kit for large dome, 65 construction points.

New surface Armored domes, 155 construction points.  (large surface dome would be 100 points without armor, no research really needed)

Armored domes have a +20 bonus to critical failures and other emergencies.

* investigate the local surroundings for useful resources and suitable location for hydro (56+10+5)  Progress

The eastern mountains are quickly ruled out for short term hydroelectric power, there are no natural areas for collection and all of the storage and collection would need to be built by hand.  Long term plans could include micro-hydroelectric systems for individual buildings in the area but building and transporting electricity from the area is deemed impractical for now.

The inland lakes and canyon river seem to be much more practical solutions, the lakes are further away and not fully explored while the nearby canyon would need a lot of work for building up a true reservoir.  The primary issue is that they ran completely dry at one point and are rather shallow, significant work would be needed to truly control the system.  Surveying of the area is ongoing for now.

A radical idea for a massive reservoir consisting of the entire inland valley and canyon system is put forward, but more work will need to be done to look at if it can really be dammed efficiently.

Several minerals which may contain rare earth metals are spotted on the surface along with what may be cave or small canyon entrances, particularly on the inland side of the hill and near the mountains.  More work will be needed to pin down and analyze the data.

+10 to ongoing nearby mineral and hydroelectric survey (+15 total)

Inland Lakes Hydroelectric dam can be designed (up to 500 MW estimated)

Inland lakes reservoir and flood control dam can be designed

Canyon Flow-of-the-River dam can be designed (150 MW base)

Underground artificial river hydroelectric system can be designed (??? MWs)

Another slight tremor hits the area as the second dome is completed, some concerns are aired about setting up some emergency procedures for greater quakes when the satellites spot something unexpected on the western slopes.  Small pools of water on the mountainside are heating up, a clear indication of some kind of geothermal system present in the area.  Panicked work quickly confirms that the area has no indication of radical vulcanism but this new evidence throws out much of the research already done.

While the location is quite a distance from the ship the heated bedrock could extend over a larger area.

Geothermal research unlocked

During some downtime a smaller ore processing facility is designed.  Containing a set of an ore separators and a smelter with a smaller logistics control, holding tanks and scaled down research facility it is less efficient then the large system but more inline with the current needs of the crew.

Medium Mineral Processing Facility

Construction Cost [200 work .5 advanced parts .5 basic parts]

Electricity use 5 MW

1 manpower for general production; +5 to basic construction or +10 to advanced materials construction(these will be more difficult to make anyway) to one project or eliminate penalties to 2 projects.

2 manpower Geology and Material Sciences science slot at +0

Medium sized

Rains are now accompanied by high winds, a tropical storm system is spotted coming from the equator although it is losing power over land.  A strong system from the ocean is also present, causing water bound tornadoes to be spotted off the coast.

Weather penalties -10 to -20 for surface activities.

Turn 8 suggestions

27-2=25 manpower available

Strain on water and food systems.

Notable changes:
2 empty large domes
Vivisection can be added to cryogenics research, almost certainly fatal.
Multiple specific hydroelectric projects
Armor upgrade and armored surface domes added
Digging project completed.
Stormy seasons

Actions:

Again if anything is unclear feel free to ask, I'll add an updated map when you finish the current survey.

Try and specify an approximate size or output desire for projects or I will decide something "reasonable."

No actual plan here, again.

- We need the Dam, anyway. The Canyon is a good candidate. Also, if we don't need power, we can just hold the water up until we need to drain it.
-- Specify dam design: >=150MW maximum output, reservoir must be large enough to store water to sustain 100MW continuous output for >=three months.
-- Science and survey people should continue to support this design. We should also note if there is any hot water around.

- Mining vehicles should start extract those metal bearing rocks around the area. We will get the mineral processing facility up and running (at least we will work on it before we know how to build the dam) so there is no drawback in mining the rocks out first.
- Constructors should build the Medium Mineral Processing Facility.
- Medical should continue to Investigate Cryogenic Systems
- Everything should be the same.

- If there is any excess personnel: How about an hot springs trip under respirators?

I feel the need to note that there's currently a hurricane raging over the base. Going for a hot springs trip is not exactly advisable, and I would like to limit other outside activities as well. On that note, the Canyon design was suggested to be a flow-of-the-river type. That means it doesn't include a dam, or any storage.

Anyway, is this alright? Most construction is inside, thus avoiding trouble with the weather. I have no idea what to do with the miner though.

Can't we exactly dam up the Canyon?

Not that I don't like geothermal energy, but I don't think we can guarantee a output with these.

I think sticking some turbines in the Canyon is a good idea. It shouldn't cost us anything we can't mine ourselves, and I can't see any way for it to become dangerous after construction is finished.

Geothermal is certainly a good idea, but I'm not sure I trust the mountains not to give us trouble.

Suggested work for miners:

- Just follow the veins!
- Prepare for another CC dome - we need more of them anyway so why let them rot

Hmm... While discarding one of our frozen workers for science is clearly a bad plan, can we get some of the same results by using small samples from each frozen individual?

Other than that, Ebbor plan looks good. Miners could try mining the metal veins...

Slightly smaller bonus, vague bonus for the pitchfork wielding mob.

Don't ask me where they will get pitchforks.

They clearly will have the factory kit fabricate them.
