Short swords vs battle axes

Is there any reason to prefer short swords over battle axes for some applications?

I don't have the links on hand but I've read some !!SCIENCE!! that has been done on weapon effects and the sort, coupled with my experiences in Adventure mode. It seems that axes are really good for chopping off limbs, including heads. Short swords can do this as well, but they are more likely to get stuck in the target. Axes, however, don't have a piercing attack like the short sword does (both axes and short swords have a cutting and a blunt attack).
This piercing attack would be useful in the right situation (i.e the opponent is faster than you and you need an attack to slow them down, a stab to the guts would be useful as it would pierce any light "armour" [clothes]).
In Fortress mode I believe that sometimes a dwarf will have to multigrasp an axe because they are too small.
I also believe that short swords attack faster, allowing more hits in a given time than an axe.
