You hold on as tight as you possibly can as the drop pod hurtles toward the ground. A rookie in your pod screams his head off all the way down. His name's Ryan, this is his first drop. You're 99% sure the kid lied about his age to get in. The pod slams into the dirt, and the doors fly open. You've landed right on target: in a park in the middle of a large urban center. Your NCO grabs Ryan and throws him out of the pod, and orders your squad to get a perimeter. Other pods fall and open all around you in the park. Civilians run away. Cars crash, and speed away as fast as they can. Some put their hands up and stay put.
You begin moving to cover, but as soon as you do an electrical shock goes through your body, sending you to the ground. You can't get up. Men are screaming and shouting for you to disable electronics and that there was an EMP blast. You quickly disable your electronics, and slowly get up. Your NCO is trying to get Ryan to quit squirming so he can turn his electronics off. Just as this happens, a shell flies through the park and connects with a drop pod, causing it to burst into flames, igniting the men around it. "Tank!" you hear someone shout.
You dive behind a drop pod as the tank fires off another shell, connecting with yet another drop pod. Just as this happens, gunfire explodes throughout the square. Skyscraper windows are shot out and broken and replaced with muzzle flashes. They have this drop point pinned from all angles.
You watch a friendly run out from cover behind a tree, onto the road, looking to get inside a building and to get out of the square. The second he steps foot on the road, he is hit by another speeding enemy tank and turned into a cloud of red mist. Another friendly tries the route he took and is mowed down by gunfire. Soon the road is filled with a wave of friendlies desperately trying to make their way out of the square.
Your NCO grabs you by the shoulder and lifts you up to his face. "We're gonna fucking die if we stay here, let's go!" he yells into your face, and runs off into the road with the wave of friendly infantry.
You follow your NCO into the open doors of the nearest skyscraper. As soon as you get inside, your NCO drops. The man standing next to you drops as well. You dive behind a nearby desk to take cover from the gunfire. Friendly soldiers pour through the door and break through the windows and begin to take up cover positions inside the building, all the while you stick tight behind the desk.
Once your friendlies start firing back, you lean over your cover and look for where the enemies are firing from. There are sandbags lined up a ways down, and a squad or so of enemies are dug in behind it. They have the positioning, but you have greater numbers. You line up a shot and cap one of the enemies' helmets off with a ding before getting back into cover.
You lean over your cover to lay down suppressing fire, but instantly are sent to the ground by a bullet to the shoulder. You stay behind the desk and hold onto the wound. Blood is gushing out of the wound quickly, and you aren't sure whether or not your body armor's built-in first aid system can fix the wound. Another squad of friendlies comes rushing into the building, and are immediately torn down by enemy gunfire.
You try to throw a grenade into the enemy's positions, but it bounces off their cover and does no damage to them. You call out for any of your squad members to respond on your radio, but you hear no response.
You yell out curse words as you blind fire over your cover, fully auto. You don't know if you hit anything. A friendly comes running to your cover, and digs in next to you. "What the fuck is going on?" he asks.
"I don't feckin' know! One minute, my squads running from a goddamn tank, and the next we're coming under fire from those fuckers over there!" you gesture towards the enemies. "I took a round to the shoulder, and I don't know where the rest of my squad is!"
"Well here, I'll use my first aid on you. Turn yours on too." With your combined first aid, you quickly regain feeling in your arm and it isn't long before it's feeling good again. You see your friendlies pushing up, as the enemies at the counters have all fallen back or died.
Just as you begin to heal yourself up, you hear a gigantic crack and feel the building lurching. Men immediately begin sprinting from the building for their lives, including the man that had been healing you. You try to get up, but you're too slow. The force of the building collapsing kills you and many other soldiers.
You hold as tightly as you can to your pod as it spirals out of control. An enemy anti-air round managed to hit the backside, and it took it heavily off course. Your squad was designated to land into the square of a population center, but your current trajectory should be sending you directly into-
Your thinking is cut off by the impact of your pod slamming through the window of a slum building. Scrap metal and junk fly through the air as your pod doors fly open and you lose your grip. You fly out of the pod, but somehow manage to grab onto the window ledge as the pod takes out the opposite wall of the building. You drag yourself up through the window, and look out the hole in the wall. It's only about a two story drop. You see your squad leader come out, and another squad member comes out limping.
You hop down through the hole in the wall and run over to your squad mate. Your squad leader reaches back into the pod and hands you your rifle. "Let's heal him up." your squad leader says.
You quickly begin using your medical systems on your squad member, and soon he is able to run again.
"Alright, we need to get moving. There'll be an attack coming after that kind of a crash."
"How far off target are we, sir?" you ask. "We could make a run for it using the buildings for cover."
Your squad leader checks his map, and replies, "Well, we're not getting to our objective, if that's what you were asking. This city's got seven districts, and we landed in the one furthest from the center. We're in the slums. No friendlies were designated to land here, and chances are that command isn't gonna send any support for four grunts lost in a worthless slum. Chances are that we'll have to fight gangs before we fight actual military."
"Then let's haul ass before we start getting shot up." you say.
"That's the plan," your squad leader replies. "We'll move our way towards the center, but I don't know just how far we'll get." Just as he finishes his sentence, you can hear a crowd forming up the street. "Let's get moving."
You move with your squad in the direction of the city center, keeping to alleyways and behind buildings. Just as you are coming out of an alleyway, a person walks by. They turn and see you. Their eyes go wide. They look ready to scream.
You sprint out of the alleyway and tackle the civilian, but she lets out a scream before you can put your hand over her mouth.
"Shut up! Keep calm!" you whisper as you drag her back into the alleyway, but it's too late. The crowd heard that scream for sure. You hear yelling and masses of footsteps coming from the north.
You drag the lady back to an alley wall, and keep your hand over her mouth as you say "Listen miss, Me and my buddies are just trying to keep quiet. I know that you would rather rat us out to the locals. But I am asking nicely here since you are just a bystander: Would you please create a distraction, or at the very least deny having seen us?"
The lady stares at you in fear and nods. As soon as you let your hand off her mouth, she screams again.
"Fuck it," you hear your NCO yell. "let her run. We've gotta get the fuck out of here!" Your squad begins to run down the alleyway away from the noises which are growing louder and louder.
"Shit times a million," you whisper to yourself as you turn and begin to sprint down the alley, flicking your safety off as you run. Your squad is already a good ways down the alley, and they turn out of your view. Just as you reach the turn, gunshots riddle the wall in front of you from behind. You turn the corner and see your squad turn left. Just as they turn out of view, an enemy comes into view on a roof directly in front of you.
You put two quick shots into his chest and continue running after your squad.
"Hache, hurry the fuck up!" you hear your squad leader yell.
You duck behind a dumpster, and ready your rifle on the oncoming mob. One comes around the corner and you fire out a burst. He runs out toward you and you drop him with a shot to the chest. An enemy shows up on the roof across from you and sprays down at you, forcing you out of cover. You raise your rifle and suppress him back behind his cover. As you try to get back into cover, a shot hits you in the shoulder, sending you to the ground.
You get yourself back up and to the dumpster, more or less sitting next to it. You notice that your rifle fell on the ground out of your reach, so you draw your pistol. An enemy rounds the dumpster, but you are ready for him. The first shot stuns him and the second greets his brain. He drops slowly. You grab a bottle from the ground near the dumpster and throw it around the corner, which gets yells from the small mob. Just as you spin back around to check your other side, a knife enters your already injured shoulder. You try to raise your rifle, but the enemy has a pistol ready in the other hand. The last thing you hear is your squad coming back for you, and the gunshots of the enemy's pistol.
