Honestly, I don't care and it was mostly just for flavor and also cause I don't know how many assault riffles are taken. We have like 5 pistols listed and nobody with the plasma skill to use 'em. You have skills for different weapon types and limited amounts of those weapon types. If everybody picks ballistics and medium range with only 3 assault riffles on board we're screwed huh?
Anyhow, yeah, I can just use an assault riffle. It's easier. I'd either be first mate or a common soldier. If nobody else wants it, then I'll be first mate if captain's taken. May as well.

Appearance: A gray moon man, just sitting there and probably not wantin to be. 5 ft 11 in tall. Green eyes. There was a time when he wanted to believe you, but he don't. Hiding it behind a straight faced military look, his exoskeleton isn't harder than anyone else's but his heart is.
Background: It's very dangerous to be right when somebody in power is wrong, and upset about it. Corrupt people don't like getting caught or the people who catch them. Damn it all, they damn you if they can to keep from gettin damned. There's a Major General back on the moon selling favors for pretty much anything, but the point is however you pay, he's the one you pay it to. Finding that out is dangerous and isolating, and that's how John ended up being sent to who knows where, except it would be the hell away from home. Isn't that just perfect? God damn it.
It was gonna be different. O yes. Join the army, get out of the mining life where you're worth less than the equipment. Work your way up. You can be somebody if you do something and work hard. It's a system based on merit.... John bought it and it was a fat fucking lie. The people in charge destroyed the whole damn earth, and the great grandkids or whoever of the ones who made it off are running stuff today just as bad. They like it that way. Blunt, doesn't like it either, and that's how it is pretty much describes his style, if he has one.
Go to school, get an education and skills. All your professors and instructors know how things work and they'll teach you how to do things, from a book. Some of that stuff actually is useful, especially the applied stuff, but the theory, good luck applying that. John focused his studies on things he thought would be most useful to keeping himself and those around him alive as long as possible when things went bad. Flying those big ships when the ones in charge got themselves in trouble, figuring out where the hell in space we all are, sensors and coms, stuff like that. Of course, he started out on the ground and ended up in the fleet without really believing it. All those skills he learned for when things went to hell, came in handy when things went to hell. Captain Wantedtomakeanameforhimself, got that name on a tombstone and tore the ship half to hell while sending most of the crew there. John managed to crash land the ship andsSomebody actually took notice, did something about it, and it stuck. John still can't believe he got promoted for crash landing a half a ship and still doesn't care.
John is a soldier's soldier, because that's who he believes matters. The Brass, have a lovely advantage of not being in the line of fire when they tell other people to get into that line, and isn't that just magic? John wasn't recruited so much as he woke up on a spaceship leaving the solar system by an experimental method. Maybe if he gets through this he'll come out of it halfway alright, and let's see if he can't get everybody else home while they're along for the ride.
