Got the OP rewritten, Crew Positions updated (going to be running with 8 crew in the new game), and the ship specifications updated. Thoughts/commentary before I post the new thread? It's nearly 2 AM where I am, so what I currently think of as good may be a bit warped, so please point out what seems to be off or could be improved.
After several decades, Earth had managed to establish multiple colonies throughout the solar system. Tensions were at a fairly low level when a strange disaster occurred that resulted in the complete destruction of the biosphere of Earth leaving it little more than a wasteland. Humanity was reduced to a few individuals found within Low Earth Orbit, Luna, Mars, and Venetian orbit. Information of these early days and the cause of the disaster is extremely limited as a result of the chaos of the colonies attempting to organize under their own authorities and later events. Some limited information is known.
The Venetian Orbit colonies had the most difficult time, having only an initial population of twelve hundred colonists primarily focused upon the mining and terraforming industries. Some desperate but measured scavenging as well as the repurposing of a large portion of some of the early colonies in order to improve their factory systems to the point wherein the Venetian air was terraformed to the point where humans were able to live upon the planet, though it would result in a dark blue skin tone due to certain aspects of the biosphere resulting in the blue aspect and distance from the sun necessitating a darker skin tone. However, the population was still dangerously low, but work into cloning allowed for them to recover, though this had a side effect of requiring the government to establish a system to determine acceptable breeding pairs for an individual in order to limit the ability for genetic disorders to spread through the limited population. After this initial accepted establishment, the government has slowly grown to have a more fascist government.
The Martian Colonies had the easiest time thanks to it having the greatest amount of established colonies existing upon the planet, with a population of over one hundred thousand. There were some areas upon the planet that still needed work, but in general the planet was terraformed. However, multiple separate governments each wanted to be in charge, and several wars broke out across the planet. These wars cost them their initial lead in population, their industrial capacity was boosted far greater than the others through having absolutely no regulations upon how they would be able to expand, which, when combined with the increased iron content in plants grown there, has resulted in the population having a shift towards a bronze skin tone. Furthermore, this initial policy has resulted in the government having the most in common with a plutocratic republic.
The Lunar and Low Earth Orbit colonies in fact initially had a greater combined amount of established colonies and population than Mars. However, a very large portion of the population and these colonies were massively dependent upon supplies from Earth. As such, the greatest level of chaos was found within these colonies, with multiple ‘accidentally’ being wiped out from life support breaking containment within the colonies. From this chaos came an organized uprising that resulted in a communistic state establishing itself within this area. In response to the growth noticed upon Venus and Mars combined with the generally limited capabilities for expansion, genetic engineering was enforced upon the population to allow for the population to live within lower density atmospheres, amongst them the incorporation of insectoid exoskeletal structures.
While in the beginning there was contact between the three sets of colonies, communications between the three dwindled and slowly died out for a variety of reasons. When contact was reestablished, the now differing ideologies resulted in a short war that did massive damage to the progress that had been made by the various colonists, on top of the backslide in progress caused as a result of Earth's destruction. Before everyone would end up killed and humanity would go extinct, a peace was managed to be established between the worlds, but after only two generations it was already beginning to become strained between Venus and Mars. Both of their planets managed to recover to pre-war levels while Lunar colonies were in the process of attempting to utilize the Venetian and Martian terraforming techniques to restore Earth, though failing. The relative freedom Mars had in its colonization prospects caused tension to begin to build between it and Venus, which likely would have resulted in the two planets going to blows again and possibly drag the Lunar colonies into it, if not for a discovery within the old Low Earth Orbit science labs under Lunar control.
This discovery was a device which could generate a wormhole to a region termed 'subspace' in order to allow for faster than light travel. Initial testing resulted in a successful jump to the rings of Neptune, to the elation of the scientists. Sadly, this proved to be a lucky fluke, as most of the later jumps proved to have a maximum range equal to around a single astronomical unit before things became too dangerous and the ship would need to return to normal space or be lost to the unknown. Despite this, the technology began to be frequently utilized for fast travel around the Solar System. With the rapid transport provided by this technology allowing easier access to the outer planets, tensions between Venus and Mars began to wane for a time.
After a few decades, a scientist by the name of Dr. Edward Forge came up with an idea. It was a speculation that, if the Wormhole drive was utilized at a certain Langrage points within the Solar System, it is possible that the wormhole opened by the drive would be able to remain stable for a period of time to permit travel on an intergalactic scale. As evidence, the Doctor claimed that the reason behind the initial launch from the Moon to Pluto, which for a yet to be determined reason had used the exact amount of energy as the common 1 AU jump, was due to the drive having interacted with a miniature Langrage point created between the Earth and Moon. Very few decided to believe this theory, and after a short period of failure to truly convince people, Dr. Forge, with a few followers, took a recently finished prototype ship that was in the process of being constructed around Luna to the nearest Langrage point, and made a wormhole jump from there. Last recording from satellites that monitored the ship indicated the subspace destabilization protocols were still online, but the ship was never shown to exit.
The situation was kept as quiet as possible, but soon the other governments found out about the disaster. Rather than releasing the information, they were barely convinced to create a ship to test whether the theory of Dr. Forge was true, as well as bringing the doctor to justice and recover the prototype. This last aspect was likely to have been the primary reason the Venetian and Martian governments agreed, hoping to recover the vessel for themselves. The three governments took an aging Lunar vessel, the LSS Judgement, and retrofitted it for the mission. A crew was selected from the loyal individuals of all three powers, though the Captain was determined to be from Luna.
This is where you come in. As a member of the crew of the retrofitted cruiser, your mission is to capture the prototype and Dr. Forge, determine if intergalactic travel is possible, and, if possible, find further planets for colonization and determine if we are alone in the universe. Good luck.
