It should run fine on windows 7, are you sure you don't have too much other stuff open in the background? (also this is 64-bit win7, right?)

we both had windows 7, 64bit. then we upgraded to windows 10. on both OS we get graphical issues (invisible units, artifacts) and out of memory issues. we even tried playing it in safe boot like one forum post suggested, and it still did it.

it happens to both of us, which is weird.

no other game we play has graphical issues or this problem of out of memory, except RUST but that is because it has a memory leak in the actual game.

You tried safe boot, but not compatibility mode? The latter is usually much easier to use than safe mode.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

no, I tried running it in xp compatibility mode (also when I still had windows 7) and I dunno if my friend did or not. I told him to try it, but dunno if he did or not. that was one of the first things I tried. It made the game not crash (so it did fix that), but I got invisible units and a bunch of graphical weirdness. even before installing mods. except on windows 10, it still just crashes even when set to that mode.

Welcome :D
My main motivation for opening a thread, however, was getting some mod suggestions. How's the Civ3 modding scene going?

I think I am the first in the thread I am not the first to mention Fall from Heaven 2, but it is still probably the best fantasy 4x out there, especially with the mod mod Master of Mana. It completely changes the CIV 4 experience in so many amazing ways. It is also really fun to play with friends, even over hotseat, because your strategy inevitably revolves around some hilariously broken combination of mechanics, rather than normal rock/paper/scissors warfare, be it mind control and chaos puppets or turning all land to ice.

Prime example being when my friend playing the Illians who wish to bring the god of winter to life, started a war with the entire globe from a position of power and then summoned the ice demon race, taking over them. As the war raged on, and Illian rituals turned everything into tundra, all the Illian dead fed my friend's civ as souls which could be units or population points, so his cities grew to size 30 in the early game and he started building an endless army of ice locust swarms that bred other locust swarms.

I conquered the peaceful desert people in the lands between us and summoned hell into my lands, turning the desert into a sea of flames he couldn't cross. I worshipped the god of thieves so he couldn't see my mages. My queen (Sheaim) teleported around the battlefield nuking locust swarms, while our flesh golems clashed over the impassable mountains (I taught him the 'merge it with a parrot/raven/hawk' trick to give the golem flight)

Great goddamn game, totally free mod. Glad Kael got a job out of it, even if Fallen Enchantress isn't nearly the game FFH2 is.

Second reply to the thread mentioned Master of Mana :P

But yeah, lotta' folks have mentioned that or one of the FfH variations. Me as well, they're great stuff.

I've been trying C2C, given the opinion of it so far. Looks pretty awesome.

My only complaint are the turn times. No real surprise there, since even the base game could get long at the end, and C2C adds so much stuff to be calculated every turn, to say nothing of the decisions the AI needs to make. Using the civopedia is also irritating as a result of the load times when opening it. It is a little better if you're constantly referring to it, as it gets cached, but it seems to clear that over time, even if you haven't out-and-out quit save or game and come back.

How do I not lose at civ 4?

I've played a few games but I eventually just get overrun by all the other factions...
Should I try and conquer nearby civs early on so I'm stronger in the late game?

too many can be a problem early on, and spacing is an issue.  A well organized development plan is important, at least to my playstyle.

So is owning your own landmass.  Getting bogged down in wars will let others overtake you, which is why I always go for early rapid conquest to secure room to grow.  Then generally run peaceful through the mid/late game.

kmod.

Its a nice buff to ai.  theyre much, much better about money/attackong/diplomacy.

I havent played in awhile, but I forget what nonmodded bts is like.

try kmod

pedit:  k-mod, by name.

More properly its a ai modification that also has a few tweaks for 'balance'  iirc he modifies how cultural borders are determined, as well as adding some buffs to buildngs that are weak.  One I know for certain is monuments don't obsolete, so it becomes more worthwhile to build.

Some of the ai go from, imo, mediocre to a real issue.  William Von Douchebag is one.  His military is efficient and his economy is humming.

AIs like Monty and Shaka still warmongers, but will either archer-rush a weak player or build some infrastructure and make a passing attmept at not falling into sending spearmen at a wall of muskets.  Suprise, Monty likes to build for religion.
