So my very first game of civ 4 is going interestingly. I plopped my second city down on a space that has two gold deposits, so that's going to make for good money. And I plan on settling my third city in a place that has wine, wheat, marble, and cows!

Despite setting the map to the largest size, I already found all the other civs, with the seventh already having been killed (RIP mystery civ). The order from highest score to bottom is France, Russia, Mansa Musa of whoever he represents, me as England, Saladin, China, and then Montezuma. This is going to be interesting I think. It's currently 2050 BC.

I'm going in literally blind except with what I remember from civ 2 years ago, on the Noble difficulty (the one where it says it's at its fairest before the game begins actively giving the AI bonuses.)

Meeting all civs early annoys me as well, it removes all 'exploration' charm early. That's why I often play continents. Still, early game shoulx, IMO, be about exploration, wilderness/barbarians and settling, not immediately meeting two civs ten tiles away from your capitol. Fall from heaven does somewhat better job about this, with wilderness being much more dangerous and interesting, and settlers more expensive.

Good luck, Blackray, all the Civ 4 games I've tried this and last month have ended with me being destroyed.

Like I said in my first post in the thread, I haven't played a Civ game since civ 2 on the PS1. So it's all just about new to me. I guess after a vanilla game I'll check out civfanatics. Mostly I'll be wanting something that balances/betters the AI, make it less cheaty I guess and more realistic, if that makes sense.

Also if anyone wants to play a multiplayer game against a completely oblivious person feel free to speak up.

I'd be interested in playing, though I never got hamachi to work... Also, I suck in Civ 4, I'm more of a role-player than min-maxer. BUT it'd be cool if we got B12 forum game to work.

Has anyone tried Quot Capita: Magesty?

Thread here:  http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=498840

It looks like an update of Quot Capita merged with "Extra" mod.  Sounds like it is buggy for some people, especially under win10.  I dont see anything else like it has the features of QC, and honestly I haven't seen an empire building game of any sort that has been interesting since being spoiled by QC.  So I'm thinking of trying it out.

On the other hand, I have an unplayed copy of Civ5+G&K on steam, so might try that...

I suck really bad at Civ 4, but generally I've found meeting everyone early eventually gets the entire world pissed at you barring religious brothers due to you refusing to pay tribute to someone stacking up over centuries.

I downloaded it a few hours ago, but I'm having issues with interface (it doesn't show up at all). Will check it out again later.

Civ 4 is probably my favorite in the series.  Put countless hours into it.

Meh, that's par for the course in every 4X I've played. They look down on me for being weak because I don't build much (or sometimes any) military until I have something I won't research an upgrade to fifteen turns later. The AI think I'm a pushover because the military they always maintain outmatches my non-existent one.

Having your military large enough that they don't look down on you for being a pushover and not large enough to not be a major threat to them is one of the hardest things to achieve in a Civ game when you are not going for conquest IMHO.

Also Machine Gun units in BTS can be some of the most powerful late-game units for defending if utilized correct and if upgraded from obsolete Archer Units with the City Garrison Promotion. I had a game once against a numerically superior Germany who went all blitzkrieg on me as soon as they started building an lots of Panzers. Having being lazy and not really attending too well to my defenses a lost a few cities in the initial strike, but they were halted in thier tracks by a city with two Machine Gun units hastily upgraded from Archer units with City Garrison III and three Newly acquired SAM infantry. I watched numerous tanks just get annihilated by something that shouldn't of done so. From there on they couldn't break my defenses as that city quickly went from some ragtag and some new units to elite troops. In the end even powerful late game Modern Armour were still taken down to my now elite experienced Machine Guns (The Modern Armour were likely freshly built not battle hardened but still). Note that gaining promotions a unit wouldn't gain normally via the process of upgrading may or may not be unintentionally not meant to be in the game, and some mod take pains it stopping promotions that don't fit their new unit class from being kept (C2C is a big example of it)

Caveman2Cosmos officially released v36, now should be a good time to get into it for those who want to try it.

Well, there goes the rest of my weekend.

I've been playing a bit of Civ4 in the Fall From Heaven 2 Orbis mod, which adds a few new factions, particularly the Scions of Patria, which are fairly unique in how they build cities. As undead, they don't breed, but they occasionally receive new settlers called "Awakened" on a percentage chance every turn, and they are able to make use of and spread a unique terrain called the Haunted Lands, which can potentially cause major issues if you're not an undead civilization. Sort of like the Roman Legion, just with dead people, thematically.

I can't play civ 4 on windows 10 or windows 7, nor can my friend.

modless (just regular game) or modded, a few turns in we get out of memory error and a crash.

he has a 3gb video card, 12 gigs of ram, I have a 4gb video card and 8gigs of ram.

did it on windows 7, and still does it on windows 10.

we only want to play caveman2cosmos though, but just like vanilla, we keep getting out of memory errors. :( it only takes a few turns or less, but it leads to a crash to desktop.

(also, we both did that .exe thing to allow more memory to be used, but that didn't work either. its an instant crash anywhere from 1-5 turns into the game. we also both get graphical issues and severe lag, even though we both have high end pcs and his is even better than mine. it isn't windows 10 either, because it also happened on windows 7. and we both have steam version, but that shouldn't matter.)

It should run fine on windows 7, are you sure you don't have too much other stuff open in the background? (also this is 64-bit win7, right?)
