I just want to be able to properly play a game of Vanilla. I just sort of end up being destroyed most of the time.

Thanks for your answers!
I also played Legends of Revolution, and Realism Invictus. Both were quite nice. For Fall from Heaven, I tried Magister modmod, but it tuned out too slow at late game :D I'll start a new game now on a smaller map.

My wishes for a mod are: 1) Artillery that doesn't 'suicide' but rather range attacks, however archers should NOT be able to range attack.  2) Forts that spread culture in tiles around fort 3) Mechanic for revolutions/civil war.
I feel that those things are really lacking in vanilla.

The first two are in A New Dawn, and I'm pretty sure Caveman 2 Cosmos as well, under the names Ranged Bombard and Fixed Borders (albeit only for garrisoned forts and only for particular - read, autocratic - forms of government).  The third is basically the sole purpose of Revolution, which is both a stand-alone and also packaged into loads of bundles, including both of the aforementioned.  You may also have some luck with Super Forts and...oh, actually, Ranged Bombard (BTS version) was apparently a separate mod before being integrated as well.

I still play the hell out of FfH2, and yeah, rarely ever mess with Vanilla anymore.

I think I didn't see it mentioned yet. I think Realism Invictus is also a pretty nice mod.

Anyone remember the Quot Capita mod?

This one really extended the re-playability of Civ4 for me.  It was a very comprehensive and well ballanced pack, probably the most polished and complete of the Civ4:BTS mods of its day.

I went looking for it a couple years ago, but seems to not be maintained any longer.  Are there any worthy successors that capture all the same interface improvements and gameplay expansions?  Is it still worth playing the original, and does it compare favorably to whatever more current mods there may be?

I remember Dune Wars being a very nicely done mod.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

So what exactly is wrong with vanilla Civ 4?

Nothing, really.  It got really good when BTS came out.  But the well done mods just give it longer legs.

Even without the added content, some of them drastically improve the UI and give you a ton more information about your capabilities and odds in battle, things that must have been decided against in the commercial release for the sake of a cleaner UI, mass appeal, appearance of simplicity, etc.

It's not as good as modded Civ 4. That's what's wrong with it.

Like I said in my first post in the thread, I haven't played a Civ game since civ 2 on the PS1. So it's all just about new to me. I guess after a vanilla game I'll check out civfanatics. Mostly I'll be wanting something that balances/betters the AI, make it less cheaty I guess and more realistic, if that makes sense.

Also if anyone wants to play a multiplayer game against a completely oblivious person feel free to speak up.

Signing in as still playing. I myself enjoy Rise of Mankind, a New Dawn mod. Sadly I can't get a multiplayer game stable enough to run, besides hotseat. And my brothers and dad will hardly touch any civ.

Cheating AI is a time honored tradition since Civ 1.  I don't think the game can handle fair play, its just not built for it.

I feel like it isnt as big of a deal in IV, though.  It happens, but it isn't in your face as badly as settlers destroying your battleships, or phalanx wrecking your tanks back in the old days.

I think it is totally fine to start vanilla.  The game is good, especially with BTS.  Adding mods just gives it more legs, lets you continue to have fun in more ways for longer, after the base game wears thin.

For me, Civ IV + BTS was fun for two months.  Adding the Quot Capita mod, I got two more years out of it, and then still fired it up occasionally after that.  That's a pretty good run for a game, I think.

I basically stopped playing vanilla once I got BtS and Caveman2Cosmos, but I still technically play Civ4, yes. It's a fairly stable mod in single-player, but last time I tried to play with a buddy we did wind up desyncing and couldn't recover. Oh well.
