My only complaint are the turn times.

This has made me end up giving up and going to a smaller map most times, or playing with fewer AI and no Barbarian Civilizations for a new world type map.

On one game I have running, turns can take anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute with only 6 other nations, two of which originated as Barbarians and have taken over the "New world" that was supposed to be empty.

I could probably steamroll everyone else off the continent, as I have modern infantry and first tier nukes, but I'm finding it more fun to simply research further. Other people are still figuring out Electricity... I can turn deer into tanks.

Have you turned down the difficulty? Having a few easy games to mess around and see how the different game mechanics work can really help you learn.

I still play this a lot (with BTS expansion but without mods except BUG because they tend to make the game run too slowly on my antique laptop.)

I like the game a lot, but I think there is too big a gap between the difficulty settings. I can win fairly comfortably on Emperor, but if I try Immortal I get my ass kicked very quickly.

Just decided to fire up Beyond the Sword with the Rhye's and Fall of Civilization RAND mod.  In the spirit of things, I set everything to random and wound up getting America.  Curious, is there a way to access a long form of those messages you get?  I was trying to build a minor power block, then suddenly everything is on fire and apparently the first world war started.  I kinda want to know what started the whole thing and if there are more on my side than just me, Ethiopia, Portugal, and the Netherlands.
