Civilization IV - Anyone still playing?
« on: October 04, 2015, 04:41:30 am »

Hello!
I searched but couldn't find any older thread about Civ4, so here it is...
Anyone else still playing civ4? I like it much more than Civ5 (I hate 1UPT), plus mods are great.
I am looking for a nice stable mod, bonus points if it works in multiplayer. I love Fall from Heaven, and I'm now checking out History Rewritten... Any other ideas?
Cheers!

I bought a Civ4 with all the expensions + Colonization from a local market (it was discounted down to like... 2$ i guess).
hadsome fun but Civ4 is... less than stable for me. I could do a full Colonization playthrough without any real problems but but Civ4 seems to hate my PC. Played 30 minutes or so and... my PC bluescreened. Didn't return to it since but still keep it on my HDD waiting for i time i feel like trying to play it again.

There was that one Touhou mod, that was somewhat fun to play. Pretty stable and there are a lot of variation in possible strategies. There are like 100+ unique units, and each of them have a couple of (often unique) usable abilities.

Theres Master of Mana Xtended, the sorta-revived version after Sephi kinda vanished. I can't say if it has stable MP or not now though.

The dozens of different Rhye's and Fall variants are all fun. They can be a bit frustrating at times, though.

Yah, it sounds like minecraft with content, you have obviously missed the point, people dont like content, they like different coloured blocks.
Seems to work fine with my copy. As soon as I loaded the human caravan came by and the world burst into fire.

Caveman2cosmos, latest versions were pretty stable, though they had some issues with desync in MP games. Didn't touch it for about a year so that might have changed too.

Have fired up master of mana within the last year or so. Good fun. Been a few months, though. Didn't mess with other mods (well, besides some of the other fall from heaven stuff) too much, and the base game is... there. I don't think I ever actually played a non-mod game of Civ IV. Probably never will. Base historical stuff's not been much of a draw for me at any point in the civ franchise.

I still play it constantly, since I couldn't really get into Civ5; I've turned into one of those old fogeys, more or less.  My favored mod is probably Rise of Mankind - A New Dawn.  It's awful big, though; I haven't had stability issues, but it's up there with Caveman2Cosmos as one of the more significant "more complexity = better" mods, and I don't play multiplayer so I can't really say anything about OOS issues other than the fact that they apparently exist, and were serious enough to get a dedicated thread.

I occasionally boot it up to play Fall From Heaven 2 or Cavemen2Cosmos, but rarely the vanilla game anymore.

I still play Civilization IV occasionally, not as commonly as I used to however.

While I do play Caveman2Cosmos and really like the mod, I cannot recommend it if you want something stable as of this time. Its still a good mod in its own right.

Master of Mana is a decent modmod that's fun. It does have some slight lore fails in my honest opinion but I've followed loosely for a long time.

Master of Mana Xtended personally I've had stability problems on.

Rise of Mankind - A New Dawn was the main mod that I played with before I started playing Caveman2Cosmos. As I remember it was pretty stable. It doesn't have the sheer content of C2C but is much more stable.

I've never played a MP of Civilization IV ever (I've had severe problems playing all Civ games bar II and V in multiplayer other than via hot seat or play by email, owing mainly to poor internet) so yeah can't help you there.

Funny that this thread popped up, I bought this around last week but I have yet to get around to playing it. For reference I have not played a civilization game since Civ 2 on the PS1. I was debating between this one and 5 but in the end I was convinced to get 4.

Anyone know where the mod site for this game is?

Yeah, I also play with vanilla Civ4 as well, except in some occasions I play with K-Mod (there are some modifications there I disagree with, but seem to be mod with best AI so far) in order to actually have some challenge without having to resort to higher difficulties which are more of you being forced to do ridiculous single player gimmicks instead of developing your empire.

Thanks for your answers!
I also played Legends of Revolution, and Realism Invictus. Both were quite nice. For Fall from Heaven, I tried Magister modmod, but it tuned out too slow at late game :D I'll start a new game now on a smaller map.

My wishes for a mod are: 1) Artillery that doesn't 'suicide' but rather range attacks, however archers should NOT be able to range attack.  2) Forts that spread culture in tiles around fort 3) Mechanic for revolutions/civil war.
I feel that those things are really lacking in vanilla.
