Alan's magic lashes out in an attempt to SHORTEN THE BLOODY TRAVEL DISTANCE (AND TIME) IN THE FUTURE, stabilizing into a temporary wormhole connecting the current group location and the ground, and also creating a permanent link from the near-top to the near-bottom of the stairs.  Hopefully.  It's more likely to just fizzle into a burst of sparks.
