It's magic taking the path of least resistance back up the lightning.
That would in fact have hit Walter.
For what it's worth, it sort of struck me like a torrent of magic rushing out of a hole in a dam.

I would have had him move to attempt to intercept the lightning in the first place, but I didn't post fast enough. Maybe he did just take the majority of the force of a blast? It's starting to look the most probable at this point.

The magical calamitystorm may be taking it a bit too far, though? If he had THAT many difficulties controlling his magic he'd probably be a smear on the ground somewhere years ago by now.
(plus yeah it kind of sets him up to be OP as nobody's business later on)

He never freaked out that badly before.
He was, quite frankly, in fear for his life, as irrational as that sounds.
