One or two helicopters can't supply 75 thousand people with water, they really need to clear the port and get those ships in.

Total confirmed death toll for the Caribbean so far stands at 9. I imagine that'll go up as authorities actually start clearing through rubble.

Dutch reporter on St. Maarten reports that the poor people of St. Maarten have started plundering. People are walking on the streets with stolen laptops and televisions.
Nearby, people are emptying out a furniture company, taking matresses, garden chairs and tables, basically the stuff you need when you are suddenly without home and shelter.
He just witnessed one guy search the rubble of his collapsed home, find an axe, and use that on the liquor store's door, after which he went in, grabbed a bottle of whisky and started drinking.

Welp, that's two in a row. Irma has became the second record breaking hurricane we've had this year. Not content to merely break US records, it's confirmed as having now maintained 185+ mph winds for longer than anything our species has noted since we started tracking. Anywhere. Globally.

Conceptually it's not the worst record it could be breaking, but. Yeah.

I wish I had done something more to prevent these deaths.

I don't know what I could have done but shit I feel like there was somewhere in my life where if I had made different choices I could have had a hand in at least indirectly saving people.

EDIT: Maybe not though. Fuck I gotta get my shit together. Someone has to enable easy desalination for millions of people.

Conflicted. I need to prepare my structure for the hurricane, but I'm scheduled to work close to all the daylight hours for the next two days (at least, current schedule for saturday is for EVERYONE to come in to work but not sure if serious) I spent all my time today preparing as much as I can, but I gotta be at work in 30 minutes.

I would happily blow them off to prep, but we are expecting a shipment of water, and batteries and such to the store basically the last second, and if I don't work people's ability to get last minute supplies will be greatly hampered.

Just ask your boss for a two hours early leave?
You'd still be able to do most of the work, and have some daylight time to prep your home.
This hurricane looks like it's not going to be kidding. Doing a meaningful job is nice and all, but at some point you do have to think about your own wellbeing as well.
Or put in other words, if you die or become homeless because of Irma, you won't be able to bring in more batteries and drinking water for the next 2 hurricanes that are coming in, because either you're dead, or you are too busy finding shelter, and too smelly and muddy, without shower and bath or clean clothes, to be allowed access to your workplace.
I can't imagine any company in the area not allowing their workers one or two hours leave to prepare their homes and belongings for the biggest storm ever measured.

Also, Jose is now up to a Cat 2, and is headed for....the Lesser Antilles. Which just got flattened by Irma.
