I've been telling my government for years they should set up and invest in a self-sustainable, apocalypse-proof floating modular city drydock. I mean, Shell isn't gonna pay for our country's economy forever, unless they hurry up with claiming a good share of the sustainable energy / hydrogen fuel cell market. And tulips apparently don't grow well underwater.

Why stop there? Why not create the flying city-fortress, where you grow tulips?

Hurricane Irma is so strong it's starting to show up on seismometers in the Caribbean -- equipment designed to measure earthquakes.

Incidentally, currently tied or about to pass the top spot for strongest atlantic hurricane on record.

I wonder if it's a combination of the instruments being that sensitive and the fact that some of the most powerful ones were decades, some many decades ago.

Also, Tropical Storm Jose has formed behind Irma.

Pretty sure most of it actually has to do with that specifically being for atlantic hurricanes. They tend to ramp hardest once they're in the caribbean or the gulf.

Yeah, the tracks as shown in this article have increasingly shown it heading up the west coast of Florida and hitting in the panhandle area. There's still a few tracks persistently showing it aiming for Louisiana, but that's just a very few compared to the mass going for Florida.

Yeah... might be asking some family living in the area if they want to come a bit further north for a bit.

... or visit family in the north east for a few days/weeks.

I should also point out that it's still strengthening, and is at 185mph wind speed right now on its way to 190+.
Good grief.

Damn, the previous hurricane that hit the Dutch carribean was Luis, in 1995. That was 'only' a cat 4, with wind speeds up to 135 mph. Back then, it destroyed 60% of all buildings on the island.
190+ mph is just ... insane?

190 mph is proof that all the whining some people do over wooden houses is hiding a greater revelation: If nature wants to kill you, she will fucking kill you.

Yeah... saw mention that one of the most accurate models so far are predicting a possible peak at around 230 mph wind speeds. Which, uh. Would make it literally the most intense hurricane we've seen in at least the better part of two hundred-ish years since we've been recording. #1 in history, baby.

Still, going to take another day or three before we've got a particularly useful measure of where and how strong it's likely to hit. But... yeah. It's pretty much guaranteed to hit continental U.S. as at least a cat 4 at this point, if it makes landfall as it's real damn likely to.

Not saying abandon the south east entirely for a few weeks, but... maybe. Maybe that ends up being a good idea in the next few days.

E: Incidentally, MSH, that 190 would tie it with Tip. 215 would match patricia. Higher would say fuck you to cyclonic wind speed records.

E2: Oh, and yeah, those islands to our south east may end up being not inhabited anymore if that thing gets too close to them somewhere on the way to a peak like that.

Oh, don't worry, mars is still worse. Particulate dust/sand is amazing and terrible, even beyond the whole unbreathable atmosphere thing.

Link to that about the model showing possible peak of 230 mph winds? Also, remember the earlier pics in this thread that showed the wind speed peaking around 180 mph, that's right now.

NOAA shows it slated to reach the Florida Keys by Sunday, but it'll already start affecting Florida by the time it gets that close.

At least we can see this one coming, unlike 'meh, remnants' to 'oh, crap' Harvey.
