NOAA has raised their projection for 2020's storm season, now expecting up to 25 named storms and 11 hurricanes.

Laura and Fourteen are en route to impact southern US Tuesday and Wednesday.

I can't remember if I've noticed two basically overlapping hurricanes ending up in the gulf like that before. Sounds like a goddamn nightmare

What do hurricanes even DO when they collide?  I would assume the weaker one would get sucked into the stronger one's low pressure zone, making the stronger one even stronger, but at the same time I would think the winds around the edges of each storm going opposite directions would at the same time screw eachother up and weaken the windstrength thus weakening it.  And what would happen to the names then? Would they keep the stronger ones name?  The older one's name?  Would they become Gotenks? Where is the SCIENCE when you need it?

You're looking for the fujiwhara effect, apparently. It looks like it, uh. Is a common search topic right now, so plugging it into the search engine of your choice will probably pull up details.

Short form seems to be they may start orbiting each other, or may indeed fusion-ha into a single, stronger, hurricane. They can also apparently like bounce off and change paths. We won't know until they get close enough for it to happen!

So that's where Atlantis went.  It encountered 2020BC.

So Laura is expected to hit cat 4 by landfall within the next 24 hours or so. Storm surge along parts of the Louisiana coast are being forecast, and I quote, as "unsurvivable", and the surge in general is expected to get as far as 30 miles inland. If you're somehow in the area and haven't got the fuck out yet, now might be the time to out your fuck get.

E: Went by the TV talking about damage, noticed they mentioned Laura got up into the 150 mph winds territory. Didn't sound like it hit outright cat 5 territory, but it was in spitting distance of it. Almost another full up Michael, less than two years later.

Storm surge apparently wasn't as bad as they were expecting (though still pretty bad), but the winds wrecked shit pretty hard in places. Folks that were in that are going to be having a rough time...

So hey, forecast hurricane landfall tomorrow somewhere between West Florida (Pensacola area) and somewhere in East-ish Louisiana. Currently predicted to be cat 2 on landfall, which hopefully isn't 2020 speak for actually-another-cat-4+. Wish people luck, hopefully we won't need it
