Adventure Mode Mining
« on: September 30, 2015, 08:53:29 am »

Is mining gems/ores from walls possible?
And if not, why not? I found it surprising that I couldn't find a way to do it in the first place, it seems like such a simple task.

I believe that mining is currently limited to Fortress mode. The game is still in alpha, after all.

Do you know why it's not in yet?
It seems as simple as opening a chest, only with a pickaxe.

Honestly this brought my expectations down by a lot, I'm new and I'm going into this game as blindly as possible, trying to get the best gameplay experience as possible through exploration and first hand learning. Yet not being able to use a pickaxe I found after finding gems in a cave I discovered makes me a bit sad.

For the same reason anything else in the development plan isn't in yet, the game isn't finished. Rest assured, it is planned, so sometime over the next 15 years or so you'll be able to build, mine and everything else fortress dwarves get up to.
To pass the time, I believe there's a Dfhack mod which allows you do it.

Even though it seems so obvious, it's actually not. When you think about it,  if you can build/mine wherever you like, logically so should everyone else be able to. Can a goblin build a tunnel to the capital? How does that effect future success at sieges around the world. Why attack through the front gate, when you can just dig through the wall? Are players going to stand for having their meticulously designed fortresses fubar'd by pick-happy gnomes desperate for the booze pile, etc, etc.

We are talking about an adventurer mode time-frame.

The problem is making sure that it takes you the correct amount of time that it would take you in fortress mode.

Though if I recall correctly there is a Dfhack thing that lets you do this....

Actually I was talking about specifically mining resources, not creating tunnels or altering the landscape (yet). I can however understand that I may have overestimated this game as it is now.

So does anyone have an explanation? (following my reasoning)

That's actually a fair point, thank you for adding that on.
I myself was thinking that doing full scale digging would also ruin the feel of adventure mode, unless if you get a profession as a miner of course.

Yeah, ADVFort and Wanderer's Friend are mods that let you do this. And I think ONLY you can do this.

But currently there's no real reason to. Also, other than sand and clay collection, this game features no "infinite resource" jobs that let you harvest resources from a tile without removing it. If you had mined that gem vein, you would have taken out part of the wall without question.

Toady theoretically could go the NetHack route and make it so you can mine the gem out of the wall, but it would then be replaced by a normal wall.
