The chances aren't lies; that's just how statistics work.

A lot of games actually lie about your chances to hit because of player reactions like that.

so, are the to hit numbers just blatant lies like in xcom? I've had a whole turn of 65%+ shots missing from the whole lance

edit2: yeah roguetech includes AIM which touches hit chances, damage and critical rolls and on top of that it comes with questionable configuration settings, luckily the json is well documented.

edit: so yeah either this game or this mod is just retarded

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

65% isn't a very good chance to hit, and I'm not sure if that includes hitting terrain instead of your target (I don't think x-com includes that in the to-hit percent).

thanks for your opinion but it's wrong both for the base game and roguetech.

How is that wrong? A 65% chance doesn't mean that 65% of all shots hit in any sample size. It means that each shot has a 65% chance to hit, which is different.

It's not the game's fault when this is misunderstood.

That said, the game does not show accurate to-hit %s. At least, according to this mod that claims to fix the UI.

Not that you can't still miss four 95% shots in a row if the RNG is against you, but at least you'd know your chances were actually 95%.

Also doesn't XCOM (at least the new ones) actually have a higher hit chance than the one displayed?

IIRC XCOM lies about hit chances on lower difficulties, essentially giving you an invisible buff.

because idiots whine and say it's rigged when they have average luck

It'll also increase your chances with every miss and resets it once you do hit.

base game has roll correction that shift the result away from 50% and a bonus for misses, all hidden from the hud. rogue tech has aim, which tries to fix hidden chances but has its own bugs (-4% misses for example, indicating the code is not doing what it thinks it's doing)

For somebody who just started (I think I did the tutorial plus first two missions before rampaging my way through three or so career mode battles), what mods would be recommended for career mode-esque play? I'm not too fussed about an authentic-to-tabletop experience, leaning more in favor of something light and casual.

Was gonna say roguetech, but it's not exactly light and casual.  It adds a lot more to the base game, which naturally adds complexity.

I got 16gb of RAM, (mostly) to make roguetech work, and also because I needed to hurry up and stop sitting on 8gb in 2019.  Doing pretty well now, at least mission-wise.  I'm thinking .5 skull missions aren't worth doing, they get almost no money unless you skip salvage completely, and the salvage you get is pretty much trash.  1 skull missions don't seem substantially harder and are a gigantic upgrade in rewards.  Just got my first retractable blade, now I just gotta cobble together a mech that can use them.

My starters are lineholder, cronus, jenner, urbanmech, and hornet.

Lineholder and Cronus are good.  I mostly keep my commander in it.  It runs hot but other than that it's solid, can take a good beating, stuck endo-steel and a guardian ECM on it.  Jenner also runs hot but I swapped its SRM out for a medium pulse, stuck a rocket launcher on it recently but as long as I use that in my first alpha strike I'm pretty free to ride the heat line as long as I don't overextend too much.

Urbanmech is urbanmech.  And I tossed the hornet in storage after its first mission.  Almost got my scout killed.

Well. I've been playing X-Piratez on the highest difficulty (with only modest amounts of reloading-- mostly things like "Where the hell do I have to stand to have LoS through this window?"), so 'casual' is probably on a different scale. Probably not the best choice of words.

Roguetech seems to be bandied about quite a bit here, so it's a good a place as any to start with.

Thinking about reformatting my jenner as a heat dispenser.  As the mechs I fight get fancier, I'm cringing a lot more when I shoot my big guns.  Seeing that "NSS destroyed" or "DHS kit destroyed" is a real killer.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

If you're talking about the spiked evasion you get in the first turn before you move, that's an anti-spawnkilling mechanic/representation of the difficulty of reacting to and shooting at or off of a hot-drop. Enemy units get it too.

If you're talking about starting the mission with a Saladin behind you, tough shit.

I dunno, the expanded starts are really wonky.  Another common one I get is people stuck on a ledge with no walkable paths, which pretty much ruins the round if he doesn't have jumpjets.  I wouldn't play this ironman, considering the possibility of shit like that.

Started a new game, got a really weird lineup this time but we'll see.  Got the mortar blackjack, an AC10 hunchback, a firestarter, a brigand, and a wasp.  Blackjack is weird, hunchback is fine, firestarter and brigand are cool but run outrageously hot.

There was a clan omnimech in my first mission, we took it out almost immediately cause it was base defense and we had turrets, got a warfare suite and clan DHS kit, which might help that firestarter or brigand run a little cooler.
