Note that the bottleneck here is probably your storage method. I use a solid state drive so it's fairly fast for me, but it would probably be slow on a hard drive, regardless of your other components.

The bottleneck is less my HDD and more my constant saving coupled with their shoddy save game system.  :P

Update: I'm now on the verge of the final mission, I'm buying the last Argo upgrade, and I'm pretty much at the endgame. I still feel like I managed to miss a huge chunk of endgame content so far though: I hardly have any +++ weapons and I've only got two assault mechs. For that matter I've hardly fought against any assault mechs. That's the other side of the wonky difficulty in this game. Every time I take a 4 skull contract and negotiate for full salvage, it somehow manages to throw me a demolisher, three cicadas, and a hunchback plus some turrets or something. It's now abundantly clear that the reason I was having so much trouble in the early game is because I was just really, really unlucky with getting more enemies than I bargained for. I definitely feel like the game would be improved by a clearer connection between challenge and reward. I wouldn't mind unpredictably difficult missions as much if they came with commensurate pay boosts for it. For that matter, contract bonus pay should give more salvage if you negotiated for salvage. It sucks to get a 45% bonus to 78,000 C-bills on a hard mission.

I did recently get a grasshopper, and I love the thing. By taking the large laser out and making full use of its support slots for small lasers, it has amazing damage output up close, and tonnage to spare for full jump jets and good armor so you can actually get close, including great DFA damage.

Since everyone is talking about what they fielded for their final missions, here are my endgame mechs.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

My best LRM boat was this unconventional Orion I fielded. I wasn't expecting it to work but it kinda does. I didn't have much luck finding any Catapults or Stalkers, so I settled with this dual LRM20 guy instead. I used to have a large laser but it got too hot, so I swapped for the AC2. The AC2 does +20 stability damage so...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I spent a lot of the game punching mechs in the face, so a lot of my mechs were designed to do so. This was one of my final iterations. I think it's the perfect culmination of close range brawler. I do also have a Dragon, a Black Knight, and a Battlemaster but for some reason this Cataphract seems to be better at brawling than all of them.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Did I say the Orion was my best LRM boat? Sorry, I meant this thing called the Doomsday Device. Look at those LRMs baby. I think only the Stalker can load more LRMs than this. Can it? I never found one so who knows. Yes, I actually cannibalized the Highlander you get for double heatsinks just to be able to use this weapon and because it's so squishy if it dies I can never make another one.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Finally, my best Assault mech. I named him after my beloved Hunchback because.... it does the same thing... Also unlike the other dedicated laser boats, this one hurts like hell when it punches. I could have put more weapons, but I also loaded an Exchanger, a TTS, and lots and lots of jump jets. The heat management in this thing is amazing, and I can basically alpha strike nonstop.

Geez.  If that's your final mission loadout, I can field something close to it except the Battlemaster and substitute a Grasshopper with 7 MLs.

Mmm, double heatsinks--you get them free from this Highlander LosTech mission thingy I vaguely read about?

What's pilot skills?

Orion 2xLRM-20:  Master Tactician (Tac 8) + Multishot (Gun 5) ?

Cataphract AC-20:  Breaching Shot (Gun 8) ?

Jagermech 3xLRM-15 + 1xLRM-10:  Master Tactician (Tac 8) + Multishot (Gun 5)?

Battemaster:  Juggernaught (Gut 8) + Evasive (Pilot 5) ?

I really wish they add some sort of recon option for missions where you pay extra to get a better approximation of what you'll face. Wasting salvage on shitty vehicles and lights always feels bad.

Also I'm progressing super slow, mostly because I usually do a mission or two before the laggyness starts getting annoying. It's not even visual, just being unable to tell which of your weapons are actually responsible for the kill because the damage numbers and the death animation are delayed so much is super irritating, because you're not sure if it was just your PPC that got the kill or if the AC helped at all.

Final mission setup? Sure. I'd deliberately gone looking for big boys, so I was kinda over-tonned for the finale. Still, I could've put together a full lance of assaults purely from salvaging from storyline missions, so I don't feel too bad about it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Everyone's got one of these. I just swapped out some of the Double sinks and stuck some of my MLAS+ in there instead of the stock ones. It still runs cool, and it's still a great mech. the LRM20 is great because it'll take practically any non-entrenched mech to near full stab damage in a single burst. Keep it behind the 2 shorter ranged mechs and you don't even have to worry about losing your lostech. My player character, Stormgod, has piloted this thing ever since we got it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I like PPCs. I know they're not particularly good for their weight and heat right now, but I like high damage single shot weapons, and I like messing with enemy cth. As such, this Stalker carries 2 PPCs and 2 LRM15s, for knockdowns and sensor interference, along with sniper shooting from halfway across the map. This is Glitch's ride, I feel that she's too good with PPCs to ever give her a mech without at least one.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Brawler with some midrange. Not much to say other than that I swapped in a few double sinks to save a few tons, and swapped out the LRM20 for an AC10 and jumpjets. Runs fairly cool, but that may just be because I can't keep it firing because it takes a while to catch up with fights, even with those JJs. This is Spenthia's ride. She's replaced Dekker after he got mushed on Smithon.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Murder up close. Not very effective at range. Stripping out the LRM it came with allowed me to stick those JJs, SLAS and an extra ton of AC20 ammo in there. All 3 additions have been invaluable. Behemoth has a hilarious habit of headshotting with those lovely big shots.

The final missions were piss easy. You could handle them with mediums. And basically all my pilots are melee.

If I showed my full selection of mechs, almost all of them are punching. Melee Dragon, melee Knight, melee Shadowhawk, melee Thunderbolt, etc.

I have four assaults but I don't like using two of them. The plot Atlas sucks and I have a Zeus that also sucks. I don't like using them because they're so goddamn slow and I like to punch things. Battlemaster and Highlander are amazing though.

My quest to get a King Crab before I finish the story will have to come to an end for the night. After a series of 4.5 difficulty missions with just mediocre heavy mechs, demolishers, and turrets to fight, I finally got a proper mission where there was a full lance of enemy assault mechs. None of them was a king crab, but good enough nonetheless. However I had to fight a couple demolishers as well. I move my mechs forward, using Vigilance and cover carefully, sensor locking from a safe distance and attacking with focused LRM strikes.*

Then a Demolisher moves in from sensor-blip range and headshots my best pilot with an AC20. Instant kill. Also I still have 390 tons** of enemy mechs to fight. Well that's bullshit, I'll reload the save.

...

Exact same thing happens. Time to take a break. I wonder if they use a seeded RNG so this AC20 headshot is guaranteed on that mission now.

*Which never seem to be very accurate at all. I can have 92% chance to hit the side of a tank, and end up killing it on the front, when it hadn't even been damaged before, or more often just not killing it as damage is spread everywhere. The percent chance to hit is clearly not correct, I also notice this when a called shot master pilot makes an attack on the head with 18% chance to hit, and not a single one of 45 LRM's actually hits it.

**Does it bother you that a real-world modern main battle tank weighs in at a hair over 60 tons and a walking death machine the size of an actual office building is only 100 tons? I feel like a Locust should probably weigh 100 tons...

I think it's best to discard any notion of logic when it comes to giant robots. It's better for your happiness.

That being said, maybe these are magic space tons. Like nautical miles. They use the same name but are bigger. Or maybe these space future guys have fancy space metals so their MBTs are lighter than what we have. Or they just generally use lighter MBTs because of the preference for giant mechs or how it's cheaper to transport / make across the galaxy.

I'd like to point out that in Mechwarrior Living Legends, planes and tanks are way scarier than the mechs.

If you have the right people using them, then Elementals are more scary then most mechs in MWLL  :P

'Mechs were developed in like, the 2500s, they're made of materials we don't possess science developed enough to understand.  It is reasonable to assume that whatever they are made of is incredibly lightweight and strong compared to steel.  Also, the office building remark is way off base, the biggest assault is only like five stories (around 15 meters) max.

LRMs ignore aimed shot, not sure about SRMs. Fun to know, right? Especially after being able to use it on LRM-only boats and there isn't even a loading screen hint mentioning that.
My lance composition through entire game is super close range S/M laserboat (currently awesome with single PPC on top, going to get Atlas) Master Tactician + Bulwark skills, AC+SRM with mlas if i have spare tons (Crab with 2xAC20, who says goodbye to whomever he wants) MT+B skills, Long range direct fire mech with small AC / gauss, large lasers and maybe LRM with almost no armor (highlander with gauss, AC5, LL, LRM20+15, maybe going to be second Crab) with Breaching Shot and Bulwark and lrmboat (currently Orion with LRM55 because the only possible upgrade is Stalker, which I haven't yet seen) with BS and B.
LRMs with +2 stab are so op. LRM20 and anything else with stab dmg will fall any mech without entrenched. It becomes annoying you can't fall mech which aren't unstable. That's why my lrm boat got multishot. I regreat taking breaching shot though. Have destroyed too many mechs, which were going to lose their meat in same attack because of that.
Looking at what's ingame lostech seems useless but gauss and heat sinks. Who would take medium pulse over normal with only 20% more dmg and +5% acc just for 2.5 times bigger heat usage? They are all like that. Unavailable mechs (atlas and bk) at least have more available tonnage than their normal counterparts, but its most likely because they are unavailable - highlander has normal empty tonnage.

Meh, IS med pulse lasers are worse than MLs in the tabletop as well for most cases. Twice as heavy, 30% less range, for 20% more damage and -2 to hit. Because of the range brackets that only makes it hit better at some hexes of its short range. They are good on jumping mechs imo, that can hop behind enemies and then let loose with that -2 to hit.
