Yeah... I find it very hard to care.  The pacing is bad too. "Three years later"  I'm given three random dudes of whom I know nothing. I can play this as "battlebrothers in space".... but battlebrothers oddly enough made me care more abut the characters

Would be nice to have a sandbox mode that just starts you in the Argo and ignores the whole plot thing.

I hate travelling.  I did not find the option to stop showing the same video scene.  Just fast travel me there, thanks.

Also, seems like there's a memory leak after playing for some time while having google chrome up twitch / yt.

At least I can save and reload ok, but can I skip the stupid into and get to the load menu sooner?

I do manual saves now and keep track on which save I want after confirming a build refit.

The story makes me wonder why they didn't do something like Mechwarrior 4 Mercs for the story. I couldn't care less about who I'm fighting for, (especially when they talk like an NPC from Neverwinter Nights 1) that's kinda the whole point of being a merc.

Side question, when negotiating contracts in the early game, I’m starting to get the feel that it’s better to drop payment to minimum, bump up salvage a tick and pick up reputation if its a faction, and just fund the lance through selling salvage. I picked up a PPC worth 700k, far more then the mission paid out.

Well, but the "worth" value it tells you is useless. Sure, that is how much it might cost you to buy that PPC, but selling it will net you a tiny fraction of that. A lucky draw that like that might still pay out enough to be worth it, but you can't bank on that.

The only things I found worth selling reliably are mechs, so getting 3 salvage choices and taking out a mech without destroying can in fact net you a lot more than the contract would have paid. Or at least just as much.

So your plan can work, you just have to be careful about what you do.

Yeah the writing/story is pretty rubbish. It's not offensively bad, it's just so, so bland and mediocre. It's made worse by the fact that the ending is given to you before you even start.

I have a strong feeling that they probably over-reached in the story department early on and had to make a last minute change to dumb it all down. All the signs are there (choosing a background, great random event writing etc.) and they're definitely capable developers, but it might have become too convoluted/hard to pull off so they reigned it all in last minute and made a much more basic story.

With enough work and polish, it could have been a forgettable flash game on Kongregate.

i think the storry does a great job in telling players that are not much into the bt lore how things are run in that area of the universe.
its not purlizer stuff, but its a solid base for expansions or follow ups. i also dont realy care so im cool with that.
gameplay gets quite repetitve tho. the random missions are very simmilar. i dont think i will have much fun with that endless mode.

about negotiations, i pretty much always take full salvage. it depends on the contract, some contracts give lots of payment and little salvage (or vice versa). so picking salvage in some contracts is not worth it. at the same time, you can just hop to the next system and generate new contracts, so there isnt realy a point to even start missions that dont pay well or that make you babysit suicidal racing cars.

Yeah, this is probably the case.

I actually really liked the way Mercs 4 did the campaign. It was very fluid and the available missions changed depending on who you aligned with and what you did. You had three different endings alongside a whole bunch of side missions with lengthy resolutions such as when you first encounter the clanners ending up with you duelling them at the end of the mission chain (where you recruit their badass boss). Or like when you keep pissing off another rival merc group they end up challenging you to a duel. It was great all around.

Not to mention the characters were that were more memorable. Your main character, Spectre, was a cool guy who was also a bit of a hardass. Your adjutant who hates Steiner and is always babying you. Duncan Fisher, the god-tier voice of the Colosseum.

They need to do a campaign like that here.

One general rule  for tweaking contracts is
Do 1 contract that will pay for the month's expense, then you can afford to tweak getting more salvage.

If there are mins 3 salvage to get initially, I prefer that just in case a mech I want gets pilot killed and I can claim all 3 part for a full.

I think I can safely say after beating the game that the only character I liked was Commodore Ostergaard.

----

Edit: I started reading this: https://www.pcgamer.com/battletech-lore/

Basically it states that they created this campaign as a "tutorial" to Battletech and establish a baseline for people to understand kinda what's currently happening in the universe. They also have you doing this silly little nonsense campaign because it's easy to understand and you don't need to learn all the politics that's happening. Not to mention they want us to get used to the crappy technology so we truly understand what the clans bring and just how much better it is when they arrive.

Additionally they mention this:
Quote
One of the bigger events in the universe is the marriage of Hanse Davion and Melissa Steiner.

Yeah, that’s not too far down the road, but yeah, that’s a big one. We have, again—if players give a damn and we get to make more of this, we have a lot of fun ideas on how to play with the events leading up to that and what happens after.

So hopefully there's something more substantial down the line.

Yeah, I get the feeling this is a lot like the X-Com reboot in a way. As much a 'can we actually do this and get it to work?' as anything else.

Hm...you can fit a king crab with jump jets...that is actually a bit terrifying.

Edit: Not really, it just means it can move two tiles more then it can walk. But it does have an insane 250 damage death from above.
Edit2: The enemies just flat out ignore the king crab and rush past it, letting it blow up mech after mech with back shots.

high / low spirit bug is triggered by skillpoint assignment.
if you dont assign skillpoints during its duration, or you save and reload the game before it runs out after you assigned skillpoints, the effect will not get stuck.

I just started playing and I have a question - how expendable are my mechwarriors? Is it like Darkest Dungeon where I should just accept death and keep throwing them into the meat grinder? Or is it more like the new XCom where I might be more inclined to do a little savescumming if I was particularly unlucky and lost a character that I had invested a lot of time in?
