Is there any down side to tanking your crew allowance during the monthly budget? Does it just affect starting morale in battle, or does it have some influence in the occasional ship events that pop up?
According to the game it says it might make your mechwarriors jump ship.

I just noticed your mech's appearance changes depending on your loadout. That's pretty nifty. But I guess the models are from MWO and those already change depending on your loadout. Still, it's nice.

Also goes to show how often I'm actually paying attention to the details.

On another note, jeesus ballz this game is getting hard as hell. If you thought unlocking assaults makes the game easier think again. Fighting enemy assaults gets brutal and meatgrindery. I actually kill more with pilot injuries than actually destroying the mechs as they're so goddamn tanky. I've killed like 4 or 5 with lucky headshots now, not because I was aiming at the head but because I shot at them so much RNG just gave me the kill.

I did have a super ultra lucky headshot though. I had an assassination mission where the reinforcements was a full lance of assaults. That assault catapult, Atlas, Battlemaster, and Zeus. I only had my one Highlander and three heavies. To make matters worse they managed to knockdown one of my mechs and instagibbed my pilot so I was severely outnumbered and outgunned.

It came down to the enemy's full health Atlas and Battlemaster vs my three limping and severely broken mechs. I was seriously pissing myself. Then my Highlander, out of the blue, in the first time I shot the Atlas the entire match obliterated the head with a single gauss rifle shot, instakilling it. I was so goddamn ecstatic. Fucking free Atlas and a doomed mission saved at the last second by pure luck skill.

I really love the pacing and balancing in this game. In so many other tactics and strategy games the difficulty becomes piss easy in the late game. Here it's challenging all the way through.

I'll agree on the brutal part, but I've hardly found it meatgrindery. Precision shot and enough firepower to obliterate the CT of a heavy and the LT/RT of an assault makes pretty quick work of just about anything.

It is when you constantly have to fight like 6 or 7 of them.

Enemy assault mechs makes it easy to pick them off one at a time. All 4 of my mechs has at least 30 lrm tubes which lets me core out a king crab in 2 turns.
I guess it comes down to navy tactics, have the most amount of firepower facing the enemy while making sure the enemy has the least firepower facing you.

I think I'll also mention something odd I've been seeing, the enemy will try to mimic whatever strategy you use against them.

I can't say I've ever seen the AI mimicking the 'get shot repeatedly in the head' tactic that I have been using.

Secretly we're all playing Big Head mode.

Try a mech with several srm6 and/or machineguns, shoot the enemy mech in the front and you will hit the head fairly often, although max damage to enemy pilot is 2, 1 from a head hit, ammo explosion or torso lost and then 1 from falling down. The one time I ran a srm shadowhawk, it did hit the enemy's head fairly often.

I will also throw this out there, despite this being made for mechwarrior online, a good portion of the guide is valid for the game: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=573089143

Dunno, first Black Knight mech I saw used that tactic. OHKO headshot to a piddly little Heavy Laser ++.

Granted, the Munitions Dump story mission can die in a fire. EVERYTHING has a PPC. They mounted PPCs on the goddamn dogs, and while the odds of getting shot in the head aren't great, they stack up quick.

hmmmm....I'm torn. It's got some great stuff about it, but in my opinion it's just too slow paced for what it is.

Part of that is hopefully an optimisation issue - each loading screen takes forever, and it can lag a bit in combat (nothing too bad, just could do with being snappier), however I just don't think there's the tactical depth to justify how long everything takes to do. It makes me burn out pretty quickly with it - I find it difficult to start up a new mission knowing that it'll be such a slog. If they could get it all optimised, it would be a lot more manageable.

The story/writing is pretty bland so far, and as others have said they obviously had dreams of giving the player lots of narrative choices with backgrounds etc. which turned out to be just some slight flavour text. It's not offensively bad, it's just a bit 'bleh'.

All that being said, it's still a great mech game - the combat is satisfying even if slow paced, and the strategic side is really well done. I'm hoping that they can do some heavy patching to make the turns/loading snappier, and kill off the bucket load of bugs every paradox game launches with. Mix that with a few balancing tweaks and it'd be great.

For those considering it, I'd hold off till a patch or two comes out just so that it doesn't put a dampener on your enjoyment.

With enough work and polish, it could have been a forgettable flash game on Kongregate.

There's a bunch of tweaks on the reddit sub that are supposed to speed things up. Faster animations and reduced delay on sound clips. I haven't tried them yet but it's probably worth a punt.

yeah, modded animation speed helps a bit.
but lets face it, the speed of the database in this game is astrocious, and its performance is degrading with game time.
usually after a bit of playing doing *anything* has a 3-10s delay, and thats so fucked up, if it wasnt the first decent mech strategy game in decades i would not touch it with a 5 feet pole.
lets hope this gets optimized away. i would not bet on it though. more often then not the deeper flaws of games are there when they get released and they stay there forever.

The thing that helps the most is removing the delay after an audio clip plays (unless you want everything to look like looney toones, in which case you can also set all animations to 100). I set those all to 0 and the game moves way faster.

Also I enabled real borderless windowed so I'm constantly alt-tabbed out. Works like a charm.
